I was brought up very religiously but after suffering from OCD and depression for over 12 years and calling out to god for help with no response, it seems there most likely is no god to help us. Which means nobody is in control, human beings are free to do whatever they want to each other, is there no hope? This scares me.

I was also brought up religious and felt God to be cruel and oppressive. It was a relief to me to think maybe he doesn't exist. I still fear he might.

Aren't human beings already free to do what they want to each other? With all the violence and misery in the world, it sure feels that way.

It's comforting to me. It means I don't have to worry about an afterlife or an eternity of hell after leaving this world.

Even with a god, aren't humans free to do what they want, just with an added layer of consequences?

Yes, but with a god, you'd expect retribution in this life or the next otherwise it's just chaos and injustice.

Humans never agree with god's version of justice in almost any religion though. If this kind of stuff worries you, I'd recommend reading about existentialism, nihilism, and absurdism.

I truly wish I was an atheist and I wish nothing would make sense. Then I wouldn't worry at all deciding to ctb nor care about anyone. But I'm not and fear the unknown.

I was religious for a long time.
After a while , I used to think what is god doing sitting up there when there are so many disastrous things happening here ? As a human being, I can't stand some things goin on infront of my eyes, will try to stop. But, what is she/he doing being aware of all the things that are going on? I felt it better to believe there is no god. That is the only way some things made sense to me.
Its just justifying that this place is messed up because there is no one in charge of it. This is just my belief.

The moment God died in my life (totally - completely; no hereafter, simply nothing!) was in fact - next to it being a process of years I might say - a very sudden moment. Someone I totally adored or even worshipped made it clear that there would be literally nothing left of us. I was flabbergasted! I remember enthusiastically dancing around in my appartment with my dog .... singing NO HAND ABOVE ME! I am Free! I saw the *light*!;) The interesting is; I wasn't even aware of the possibility that this kind of awareness could exist: Oblivion, total emptiness. And it got me from the moment I heard. I had lived a huge lie as so many of us. All I had believed before just paled by comparison to oblivion, in conviction. Doubts about anything after or above were gone from that moment on. I was free. Well ok, no fear about ghosts any longer but burglars instead... etc. No black without white ey ;)

Well I meant; my fear for ghosts was gone but instead my focus on burglars (in the middle of the night) and so the more material things of life did increase (well that's what I assume).

The same thing happened to me. From one moment to the next i saw the world with completely different eyes. It was like i've seen the world through a veil all my life. I see for the first time how the world really is and it is ugly. I wish I had recognized it earlier, then my life would have been very different. But what you get taught as a child and in which so many people believe, you stay true for a long time, too long, unfortunately there are people who only learn that they are wrong when it is too late, and unfortunately i am one of them.

I've never believed in god, or that there's anything after death. I think people believe that there's something after death simply because it's almost impossible for a person to imagine not existing.

The concept of retribution in the next life has always felt like something humans made up because they want it to be true. To make sense of all the injustice in the world. Just like heaven is a concept humans made up to ease the fear and finality of death. Or I could be wrong and everything in the Bible and books like it is true, who knows?

I am an atheist- it took a lot of balls for my acceptance that there is nothing after this, Nothing to make everything alright after this life. I will not meet my long gone relatives - nothing after all this - ZIPPO NIL, NADA...

nothing after all this

There could be...even a staunch Atheist like Dawkins said...on a scale of 1 to 7 (1 being there is a god, 7 being there is no god)...he is a 6.5...but, nothing like the personal God, we make it out to be....something entirely different...
