I'm serious ...... I live in the United States ...... I would like to know if there is anyplace in the United States that has good psychiatric care.
---------)*(---------)*(---------
I currently live in Texas ...... Texas is currently waging a brutal war on the mentally ill ...... If you are mentally ill in Texas ...... And you are poor ...... And you exhibit symptoms from your illness in public ...... There is a strong possibility that you will be arrested and prosecuted ...... Because it is illegal to be mentally ill in the state of Texas ...... Truth.
---------)*(---------)*(---------
I genuinely want to go someplace that I can be treated ...... I do not want to go to prison for being mentally ill ...... The Texas prison system is the largest provider of mental health care in the state ...... Truth.
---------)*(---------)*(---------
I want to get help ...... But I do not know where to go.
---------)*(---------)*(---------
Please post something in this thread if you have a suggestion ...... I am not trolling ...... I will not make light of what you say ...... I really need help.

Thank You

Dude i'm living in texas.
I'm actually pretty glad i didn't waste my time going to a facility now.

I lived in maine for a year before i got here and went to Psych up there
they didn't have any bright ideas other than introducing CBT which is just bullshit

why don't you listen to music
draw
learn to play an instrument
get out into your community
remember healthy sleeping/hygeine patterns

My mental illness keeps all these things from happening like having no healthy desire to do them.
Doing them isn't going to help me not be able to do them.
People are fucking backwards
And at the same time you're being so doped up on medication that its really difficult to even think straight or sleep when you're supposed to. Oh and in my case you have to worry about more trivial things like am i going to be able to go to the bathroom anytime soon these meds are like a cork in my ass

... i digress.

the mental health system is bullshit.
Full stop.

Oh god how it irritates me when people tell me to "do something fun" "do something you enjoy to get your mind off things". I can barely function and depression is by definition when a person can't feel anything like happiness and fun. My therapist told me to do relaxing breathing exercises and mindfulness. I told her how excruciating this is and that will not work.

Mental health care can depend on where you're located. If near a major city you at least have options because you can try different things and if the doctor/therapist etc is shit just find something else. Even if you're poor many major cities have help.

Therapy is futile in my case,

1. I know what my problems are.
2. I know how to fix them.
3. Society is against how I need to fix my problems.

Absolutely! They want us to be distracted from reality basically.

They will never ask if you considered euthanasia. They know our lives suck but they will suggest going outdoors, volunteering, or "writing your problems down". Pet a cat! Fuck.

This. Exactly. People just don't get it. The optimism of therapists is like being handed a glass of battery acid with which to quench your thirst.

I think there should be a requirement that anyone wanting certification as a therapist qualified to treat depression should have to have spent at least two years of their life buried under their own depression.

That would certainly narrow the field to select a therapist from, but maybe those who remain might actually offer constructive help.

I told my therapist that I can barely function and spend my time either in bed or staring at the wall thinking about how I want to die and she told me to go for a walk or go to a library so I wasn't alone. Seriously.

Yes, it is possible to get good psychiatric care but it's hard to find someone good at it. Imagine an instrument, a lot of people can play, but who can do it well? And if they can, they're likely to be insanely expensive. It sucks.

But there is hope. The first thing is, do you have an idea about your mental illness? Most primary care docs can actually help a little if it's not too serious, for example with some medications like SSRIs.

The best psychiatrists and care you get is likely to be at teaching hospitals or medical schools. They are far more comprehensive and detailed than most other places but it's also more difficult to get in and there might be a waiting list.

Reality/Society is fucked and horrid. People are cruel and greedy and will hurt others (including children) for a few dollars. A depressed person who can barely function cannot enthusiastically go out into that madness and make a decent happy life. They aren't that fucking stupid and illogical.

Look how things are set up. Rent, debt, a constant treadmill of suffering or fall into poverty/ homelessness. The answer: take on more debt so you can have the opportunity to maybe possible get a job by begging some slavemaster boss for the privilege of sucking his evil dick for a daily wage so you can have a roof over your head and food.

No thank you. I choose to exit this shit and not allow it to devour me.

Therapists answer is to make yourself into a happy idiot to block out reality and become less aware. Meds to blunt your emotions and make this hell tolerable. Stupid little exercises like mindfulness. I had a suicide hotline operator tell me to watch a favorite movie or watch television.

I know that we're correct and logical to hate all of this fucking shit.

Yes. It's almost insulting. As if we're so stupid that we simply forgot that we can go for a walk or listen to music. I don't do that shit because i'm so fucking done with living I am unable to feel any joy or decency.

I don't know about texas. I live in oregon- very liberal. I have access to free therapy and psych care, but I'm so fucked up mentally that none of it helps. As the other posters mentioned, they just tell me to get excercise and hang out with friends. These are things that would help before I was severly depressed. If you feel like you still have room to get healthy maybe these services can help you. I can guess what they'll tell you: don't beat yourself up, excercise, do things that relax you and make you happy. If you're not too far gone, maybe these things can help. But really if they will help and you can't get assistance, you can do them yourself.

I am fully aware of the horrible state of mental health care in America ...... However ...... Some places are less horrible than others ...... I live in Texas ...... Texas has some of the worst mental health care in the nation ...... About a year ago ...... A mentally ill man walked into a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas ...... He murdered 27 people ...... And injured even more ...... This massacre might have been prevented ...... If Texas had mental health care available to the poor and the uninsured middle class ...... Texas has done Nothing to expand mental health care ...... I believe that Texas will witness many more mass murders in the future ...... People in Texas have no hope ...... Unless they are wealthy ...... It really is a Goddamn shame that nobody ever commits these mass shootings at places where wealthy people congregate ...... If a bunch of wealthy people were murdered ...... They would fix this problem the next fucking day.

I'm sorry for being so down on mental health care. I was talking from bad experience specific to me. It certainly can help people to get them out of the low they're experiencing.

Location is a major factor in what type of help you can receive. I live in NY and the options available for people here are pretty good. If you can't afford healthcare there are resources for you including free or low cost insurance, free walk in clinics for drs and meds, free therapists etc. There are really good group therapy sessions where you just talk to other depressed people with a therapist in the room which is great if you don't like the traditional therapy set up.

Maybe there are programs such as this in Austin, or Houston? I don't know much about Texas and it's huge as fuck. Austin has a reputation for being tolerant etc though Not sure how it is reality.

Unfortunately many places in the US are not like this and people are pretty much left alone to suffer often with terrible end results.

Unaffordability is a huge barrier for most people to access mental healthcare and they're often the ones who need it most. Mental illness pretty much guarantees a person will have extreme difficulty in the hellish daily rat race that sucks even for healthy people.

I went to a psych unit called Baylor Medical in Fort Worth Texas back in 2005. I don't know how much it has changed, but it left a positive impression on me when I was there. It's not cheap and the saying of "you get what you paid for" applies for medical care. Go to those freebie or low cost institutions and the staff there will beat you and make sure you never call for help again.
