I wouldn't rely on that to CTB, and like @Thanatos said, it's basically to knock an animal out so they wouldn't be conscious during the process of slaughtering them for consumption.

Yeah but a piston being slammed into your skull/brain would probably still kill you pretty fast.The FBI shot William Matix in the face with a .38 and it just knocked him out for a few minutes. He had to start fighting again, and getting shot again, to get shot more and die.
Don't overestimate blunt force trauma and penetrating trauma, and don't underestimate Life, Uh, Finding A Way.

Don't use this. In the UK we had a time when a disease called Foot and Mouth ravaged farm animals and a lot of farmers lost their income and tried to commit suicide with this. The vast majority ended up severely disfigured.
