It's not painful in the way you might assume. Complete hanging is much more successful than incomplete. If you do this right, unconsciousness is quick.

There is no pain, only discomfort.
You will feel uncomfortable because you'll be blocking the blood flow to your brain which will make you pass out and lose consciousness.
