I received SN and everything appears to be legit, the label even states "can be fatal if ingested". I opened it very briefly to look at it and smell it before tightly resealing the bottle. The only thing that concerns me is that most posts (and even google searches) say that SN is an odorless, colorless substance. Mine is more granule than powder, has a slight yellowish tinge, and smells like a chemical. Not as strong as bleach or anything, but it's definitely not odorless. Could this be because it's not food grade? I know food grade isn't necessary for ctb but I haven't seen anyone mention the smell before.

Nitrite does not have to be white.
I ordered my nitrite from the inorganic reagents store, where only chemicals are sold.

It is written on the jar that sodium nitrite is white or light yellow crystals

I can't say about the smell, since I didn't open it

The smell could be from the manufacturing site, I would just test it to check it's nitrite

Mine also has a slight chemical smell but test it first to make sure it's good.

Everywhere I've seen SN described says that it's supposed to be off-white so a yellowish tinge sounds quite right. As for the odour, I got mine from a lab supplies store (even went into their office and warehouse so I'm sure it's legit), and mine definitely smells chemically too. You should test it like others have suggested but it sounds good to me.

Thanks, mine is from a chemical supplier so I figured it's lab grade and that's why it's not the "salty" smell/taste that is often described. Not that I've tasted it yet :blarg: but I assume it'll taste like a chemical as well.

Mine, for some reason, had no distinct chemical smell at all despite looking exactly as described.

I'm guessing yours is "food grade" which would be off putting if it your sausage smelled of chemicals. I'm not sure how they change/manufacture the different grades, or why.

Nope, mine is AR lab grade 99.5%. I've got certification of analysis that is that grade of SN. I don't know why it doesn't have a chemical smell but when I smelt it, it didn't have any particular odor that I can pick up on.
