I wonder how many suicides never get reported because they are disguised as accidents to make insurance claims easier. Or simply mistaken as other causes. Wonder if real rate is higher.

Yes, I agree. I think methods like drowning can be easily dismissed as being an accident. It is unknown what the actual suicide rates are, I also think it could be much higher.

I've read that experts suspect that people who have diabetes and who die from taking too much insulin actually intentionally overdosed on insulin but there's no way for them to definitively prove it.

So many drug overdoses are labeled as accidents rather than intentional suicides.

I imagine a high proportion of these deaths of despair were carried out by passively suicidal individuals who simply didn't care to see if they lived another day. A sort of Russian roulette, I suppose.

The number of actual suicides is definitely underreported. Where I come from, family members will feel extremely ashamed/embarrassed to know their relative caught the bus, so many of them will lie and claim it was an accidental overdose instead.

Okay I see what you mean. Is it religious area? I know there is a stigma in some religions about suiccide
