Throughout the movie, we see a guy at an abandoned bus stop wait for the bus. The bus doesn't arrive until the very end of the movie. It is a metaphor for death/suicide. Then Enid, who's lost everything, commits suicide and catches the bus. It all makes sense now.
Love that movie! though not see it for years- hadnt thought about that - Isnt she just getting the bus to get out of town? not to ruin this wonderful metaphor- you could well be right!

The bus station is abandoned. The guy has been waiting for the bus for a long time. At one point, Enid tells him that the station is abandoned and the bus won't come. She first sees the bus when everything falls apart for her.
