That's a ridiculous checklist that absolutely cannot be used in such a generalized manner. We'd lose at least 1/2 the global population if we lived by that asinine theory. Take care of yourself @Final Escape ❤️

In a video of Jordan Peterson's on YouTube he tells which people are unable to be helped. If u have no job can't work, no intimate relationships or friends, if u have a health problem, and an addiction problem. If u have just three of those you are basically fucked. I have no legit job, few relationships, I'm an addict, and I have borderline personality disorder. It helps me to ctb that I know this, worsening future is my future.
I don't know about the particular video you are talking about but in other video he has said "people are stronger than their misfortunes, this is supported by the best clinical evidence" . He believes self help is sustainable and much more possible than people think. In your quote he might be referring to external help being ineffective if you are in a situation like that.

Jordan Peterson is a conservative quack masquerading as a scientist. He's a professor of psychology which is hardly an exact science and he doesn't even conduct experiments: he just dabbled in the usual social science BS. Now what he teaches (or taught, I do not waste my time on that joker) is basically religious studies mixed with conservative social criticism and some amateur philosophy and history (a lot of times he's actually flat out wrong) as well as a very basic introduction to works of literature that should be well known to anybody with the least bit of interest in civilization and western culture.

Nobody in the world can objectively determine whose cause is 'hopeless' or not, no matter what degree they hold or what expertise they claim. Unless the person in question is terminally ill of course and even then some people have defied the odds and lived a whole lot longer than expected, some of them even recovered rather miraculously.

JP is a pseudo-intellectual (apparantly quoting big names like Jung and Nietzsche like clockwork and rambling on about meaningless religious themes and Harry Potter means one is suddenly elevated to the status of leading intellectual of a generation) who purposefully misrepresented a bill (the Canadian bar association said as much, surely Canadian lawyers know that bill better than anybody included a layman like Peterson) for political purposes and constantly derides any effort to combat climate change. He, a psychologist, confuses gender with sex claiming biology is paramount in establishing one's identity (complete and utter horse shit) thereby disparaging the whole transgender community and everyone who doesn't fit his narrow-minded, conservative, white upper middle-class norms. He then has the gall of whining he somehow was discriminated against...

Either this man is bought and paid for or he really is dumb as bricks. I've watched a few of his tedious lectures and he literally made no sense at all, or any point or logical argumentation for that matter. Obfuscation and mindless oratory including pathetic amateur theater moves (how he looks as if he has seen the face of god whenever he says something that is according to him incredibly profound, priceless).

Is that really the kind of man you want to rely on with regard to the fundamental assesment of your situation?

exactly this. Jp is such a pseudo intellectual and a total grifter. It is so obvious what his game has been from day one and I'm always disappointed to hear folks fall for his tricks.

I got interested who the hell is this guy a few months ago (last summer) after seeing a lot of references.
At first, he sounded interesting.

But the more you listen to his lectures, the more you understand he's just a cult leader type.
And I dont care if he's "left wing", "right wing" and all of that bullshit.

He's found his gold mine: he's good at crafting his ideas and uttering them, he talks fast, literally barraging you with facts, metaphors, like a machinegun. Ta-ta-ta-ta-ta this, that, do this, dont do that, ta-ta-ta-ta-ta.
2000 years ago he would probably had become another "Jesus", 1500 years ago he'd be Muhammed, 19th century - some crazed mormon leader, 1980s - televangelist, 2020 - Youtube star.

People, especially the lost, the broken, the vulnerable are keen to follow whoever talks to them in this personalized, mentoring, intimidating, manipulative manner.
Nothing is new under the sun.

Hell, I don't even want to go deeper and tackle his ideas, he can say whatever he want.
Just listen, analyze with your own reasoning and move further.
Another "cult-y" Doctor that writes pop-psychology books, and works with poverty stricken addicts is Gabor Mate'. Mental health and addiction counsellors are always telling me that " I simply _must_ read his books."
My reply?
"I am disinclined to do that. One day he came into my workplace and screamed at me for something that was outside my control. He was relentless for ten minutes, until I was crying. I have nothing to learn from him."
That stops the inane suggestions!

My brother moved to Cedaredge CO from Houston and one of my friend's moved to Fairplay CO from Dallas. They both love where they live now! I wish I had time to move there and try it out.

I changed mind again. I was firmly set on ctb the other day. Then I realized maybe I'm not completely sane right now. I had ideation very bad for like a few days. Now it lifts again. I almost rehomed cat then came to my senses again. I might move to a different city not far from Denver. I don't really like it here. It's too I don't know, it's depressing.

No Matt u cant go. U are one of the people who's been here as long as I've been. We're the hanger oners lol! That's the term for the long term residents of SS.

can't work - i can work, but not at anything demanding. i deal with stress badly.
no intimate relationships or friends - check (does family count?)
health problem - does mental health count? if so, check
addiction problem - check

i fit 3/5. arguably i fit 5/5.

I have watched many of Jordan's videos, he never made a blanket statement on whose cause is hopeful and whose is not. On the contrary, he speaks logically and in probabilistic terms . The OP of this thread might want to provide the video link so we can get the complete context.

I agree with the point you make on this . Although that doesn't necessarily mean he is narrow minded nor does it have anything to do with the colour of his skin or financial status. He doesn't have to hate them in order to make the point he is making (even if its a wrong one). He is not right about everything obviously.

He has a very "matter of fact" view on things, which is refreshing to watch. He focuses on individual responsibility in his talks which a lot of people should hear. His views on "hierarchies" , "group identities " are very well analysed. If you watch him in these areas, It might change your opinion about him.

This happens when you get fucked sideways by life, losing your job, social life, financial getting worse abd getting traumatized by events in life and from there getting mentally unstable day by day and not receiving help

The video is called reality and the sacred, it shows more than one clip in separate videos so I can't remember which on it's in. Shouldn't be too hard to find though. If I find I'll post it.

I watched that video and I couldn't find anywhere where he mentions this stuff. Are you sure it's that video? It must be a different video.

the part that is missing of this is that people first need to get up their feet, find a job even if its part-time.
than slowly from their start building up again their social live.

Context mathers. JP and his family all suffer from depression, he said it runs through his family.
Yes he was in rehab, because he got really anxious after his wife almost died of a surgery complication.

@Final Escape He stated its almost impossible, and after that he goes in further detail in how you can (if you have the will to fight) slowly turn certain aspects around.
Please don't nitpick what you want to hear. Its not fair using another person as a means for your next actions.
EDIT: What I see in the video is not an attempt to demotivate you, rather a possibility of a way out of ones vicious circle.

His views on "hierarchies" , "group identities " are very well analysed. If you watch him in these areas, It might change your opinion about him.

He has the most shallow understanding of social psychology and cultural anthropology, and it shows time and time again. Don't even get me started on his knowledge of economics - it is completely absent and he continually embarrasses himself trying to wax poetic about why he thinks society is messed up.

The one thing i cannot fault him for his is psychoanalysis of literary fiction or religious texts. That stuff is top notch and i wish he had just stuck to his lane. This "matter of fact" view you are suggesting is simply because the general discourse on these topics is so god damn depraved and there are so many hucksters, that being a slightly more capable huckster makes him seem like a breath of fresh air.

He is literally just a more capable conman, but again as many people have already posted in this thread it's not hard to see through his grift.

Edit: the lobster thing should be a dead giveaway. They are invertebrates with several orders of magnitude less neurons than humans have. It's not even worth entertaining the comparison.

Right. I just didnt want someone killing themselves bc of what JP said when he has real life problems too. Not judging.
