What things can be done to prevent family (without extensive IT knowledge) from getting into your phone or PC? Is a simple password protection enough, or is there something else you would need to do?

Depends on how non-tech savy that family is, but even a person without a lot of knowledge can take the hard drives, put them into a different computer and access them through that. So unless you encrypt your stuff, it is very very easy to get access.

After format the partition table is deleted but data is still present on the disk and can be recovered using a data recovery software.
To avoid this you should format and then do multiple overwrites (but it might take a lot of time) or tear the HDD/SSD down and physically destroy the platters or the NAND flash.
