How to navigate to first unread notification?

Does anyone know how to get to the first unknown notification in the small notifications icon list? Right now I have to count backwards to get to the first unread notification because on clicking the icon all the gray's (new) turn white just like all the old ones. So I lose track of which ones are which. Is there any way to keep the color (or other) distinction between new and old notifications so it's easy to distinguish between them?
