I can't suggest this, but let's say it's a "story of mine from the past" of being your shoes:
In a non-sus way, I scooped out different retailers Asset Protection / Loss Prevention measures to see which is easiest to steal from. Once I found a good target, just be calm and confident - not too quick - and grab what you need and go. Personally, I went with a rope because it can be concealed easily enough and is just one thing, not a full cart.
I learned that my Target usually won't prosecute over food specifically until a high amount, maybe $1,000, so personally I've grabbed and gone before in times of need. Although they're definitely aware and watching without a doubt.
If I had morals and didn't want to steal, I'd still go with the hanging method but just scout around I guess waiting to find something suitable. Maybe dig through trash, or with change go to a donation station and try to find rope, extension cord, etc once I've scouted out where and when.
Hopefully my "personal experiences" helps or applies, and either way best of luck
