It seems like it's almost impossible to ensure purity of opiates, how difficult would it be to grow your own?

It would be very easy if you have the time and place to do it. Varieties that contain opium would be any that are papaver somniferum. Look for giganteums, or Hungarian blues. If you can find Laurens grape, go for those as they are considered to be a high alkaloid producer. Many people have od accidentally trying to get high on just poppy seed tea, which is brewed with a pound or so of unwashed poppy seeds. If you can grow the plant though, you can brew poppy pod tea, which a standard low tolerance dose only requires 3-5 pods. If you make a tea with 10-20 pods or more, I'm sure it would be plenty to be lethal. Seeds should be sown outdoors in November and harvested in spring. Check out r/opiumgardening or r/druggardening on Reddit for more info about strains, growing, and extraction tips. There's usually some pretty good info about poppies.

Nope. youd need a heap. opium is 10% dry weight morphine. Then you have the problem of oral bioavailability and potentiation. It takes up a conspicuous back yard full to get an ounce of raw product. If you are up to teach yourself about filtration & fermentation, one would then have just enough smokeable product to keep you alive and happy to aquire a habit.
