I'm new and I have searched to no avail so I'm very sorry if this has come up before.

Essentially I'm trying to put pressure on my carotids with my hands to the point of syncope to figure out where they are. I think I did find something but when I put pressure on them my head feels like it's about to explode.

Am I accidentally pressing my jugulars and just increasing my cranial BP by a stupid amount. I don't want to stroke out practising.

How do I tell the difference?

Thanks

Hello! Welcome to Sasu! Sorry life had brought you to this point.

A bit of anatomy: Arteries feed blood to your organs while veins take it away. The carotid artery brings blood to the brain while the jugular vein takes it away. If you cut off the jugular vein, blood gets backed up in your head and you feel pressure. If you cut off the carotid artery, blood can leave your head but fresh blood can not enter, leading to rapid loss of consciousness.

Arteries are usually deeper under the surface than veins and can be a bit more difficult to find. You were most likely just pushing on your jugulars. It takes some practice to get it right.

Try higher up as close as you can get to your jaw without being on your jaw.
