In a word: liability.

Also, it helps if an involuntary commitment happens. Helps absolve them from legal issues.

I'd wager this stems from a legal dilemma.

A lot of "I want to speak to your manager" type of people out there.
One of their relatives ctb after calling a hotline and the first thought in their mind is who to drag into court first, whether out of grief or opportunistic greed.
Makes sense you'd want those recordings as hard evidence. But you're probably legally obliged to tell people when you are recording.

Weren't these hotlines notoriously ineffective anyway? If so, then I'm not too invested in that "scaring those in need" argument.

Can't read the article but just the headline made me angry enough.

Try this archive link...

Edit: And...about what I expected. The author of the piece seems to have no problem with recording the calls, only with letting callers know they're being recorded. "Trust me as I'm deliberately misleading you," seems to be a rather popular mantra in the suicide prevention industry, doesn't it?

If you've hit a point where you are calling a hotline, you need honesty. I hope they do include a disclaimer: I'd be more open to someone honest about what they can and can't do.

That being said, I don't think I'd ever call one. What is their goal?? To listen to you? Or prevent a suicide?? They want you not to CTB and get you therapy, not actually solve your problems.

Almost like the pro-life crowd with abortion. They'll do anything to prevent you from getting one. Offer diapers, support, prayer (Lol), and friends from their church. Fast forward 5 years, when you're broke, etc. They're no where to be found. They want to ease THEIR conscience, not actually help you.

More people don't call hotlines because they, and in I don't want to speculate the specifics, probably just need someone to talk to and aren't prepared to initiate an attempt as soon as that call is over. But They know what happens if they call, police wellness check, psych ward maybe, that screws up your job, family, etc., which I feel do the exact opposite of their goal.

They put you in a space worse than some minimum security prisons, and the only thing you have you do is to think about what you did watching a clock. Which is about so bad; you don't want to get better but just constantly planning the entire time a more lethal/foolproof method because you sit looking at that wall to a point that you're lesson is to make sure you succeed rather than the end up back in that hellhole.

I had the worst case, It made me at times want to push the doctor to the ground and punch him to see if I'd go to county jail, I'm in no way a violent person, but I honestly considered it to get out of there that's a possibility I where at least I could breathe actual air; but what ever cocktail of meds they gave me gave me nightmare hallucinations of snakes attacking me. I explicitly told him what he gave me had caused serious problems in the past, ignored me and said take the pills or you stay longer. I eventually just faked taking them then in a day then felt like I was in control of my brain. Most people could use a person to talk to and not take the risk of calling the number.

They say its because of 'the laws here', but most probably they just want to have what you said recorded so they can try to use it against you and lock you up.
I dont believe in genuine desire to help anymore.

Good thing suicide hotlines in my country are so shit, Ive called 8 times, 7 times out of 8 the line was down and the last time it was occupied. So I dont need to ever worry about this.

They don't really care if the person on the other end lives; they are only doing it for the money.
