Discussion Homemade bomb - Mercury Fluminate

I was watching MythBusters - Breaking Bad Special. They were discussing the bomb walter white used in the series. People in the comments were saying its very easy to make at home. Only 5 grams of it blew an entire pumpkin off. There have been terrorist attacks carried out by people who make bombs at home. So, materials won't be so hard to get. What do you guys think?

Pumpkins =/= your flesh and bones
Chances are you'll just hurt yourself very bad, lose a hand, some fingers, an arm or your sight (happens a lot with explosive makers).
Also going with explosive is a very bad idea even if you were an expert with good materials at hand since you could be injuring other people.

I've been thinking about bombs for a while. It would be a fun method. But you'd need a pretty big payload to actually explode yourself and not just get yourself burned and maimed. Homemade stuff won't do.

I could theoretically get a hold of some explosives used for building demolition. Hmm...

Only a small amount of Mercury Fluminate makes a big explosion...you can put it in your mouth...it will easily blow your head off...and the materials are readily easily available

Bringing down the house isn't necessary but I'd enjoy a bigger explosion more.

The risk of messing the chemistry up is big if you're not a chemist but worth looking into. I can also see if I can buy the finished compound somewhere but I doubt it considering it's an explosive.

It worked in Mr Roberts too. Movies and TV have a way of showing success where we would just maim ourselves. Unless attempt #1 is a great success, you bring the ATF and FBI to your door to figure out if you are a terrorist. You can also be too successful and kill or injure others. There are simpler ways...

This suggestion is far cut off from reality. Do you know/remember MacGyver and his mannerisms? It was the first show to make it clear how fictional TV science creations and gadgets are. Partially the reason I think most sucessful shows from The Pretender on, use professional consultants - medical and weapons, for more scientific accuracy.

The closest you may come to tutorials based in reality, but still fringe literature, there is The poor man's James Bond.

But please, head over to rec.pyrotechnics.faq from the old usenet ctb forums, our grandfathers and you will see suggestions on actual useful pyrotechnics books, downloadable from libgen plus advice for distinguishing fringe obscure books.

I am only doing it not to deter from your project, but to save you some time - we all know how bad is it chasing desperate ideas before we got in the goldmine that is SS (the forum, not the Nazis; sigh, wish it was the Nazis bc of the cyanide pills they had). Mine was freezing in a chest freezer, so yeah.
