So I went to a psychiatrist last week and he prescribed me two meds, one of which is venlafaxine. I want to ask if anyone has taken it and if it had an effect on you as I don't see a difference for the week I have been taking it (I take only 150 grams a day though so that might be a reason)?

I'm on a low dose of it now. Mood has improved, have more energy, dislike the way my dreams have become more memorable and vivid when I used to not remember them at all. Make sure to get your refills on time and avoid running out because the withdrawals are severe compared to other SSRIs.

Anti depressants usually take around 6 weeks to reach their full effect, so don't worry about not noticing a difference yet.

However, for me, venlafaxine was not effective.

Hi friend I took venlafaxine, and it was typical of that whole stops the low being low but also stops the high being high thing. One side effect it had on me that I don't think I've recovered from was that it crushed my libido.
Good luck friend

Yeah, that'd be a dealbreaker for me if that side-effect occurred. On the whole the drug has been a positive; I can tolerate the weird dreams. Hopefully the effects are similarly minor for OP.

I was prescribed Venlafaxine (Effexor), and remember the brain zap/static feeling if I missed a dose.

Yes it was horrible. Did nothing for mood, but all day I got "brain zaps". It felt like mild electrical shock. It was awful getting off of them. Absolutely would not recommend.

It's going to take at least 6 weeks to build up in your system, I'm on 375mg, my psychiatrist told me that doses 250mg only work on the serotonin levels and you need to be above that to work on the noradrenaline levels also.
I have been on it quite a while... Noticed a slight lift for a couple of days then back to normal. I might have medication resistant issues because a life on meds as always gone this way.

This was the last thing I was on-- it didn't do anything. I quit it cold-turkey without withdrawals though.

It actually did get rid of my libido while I was on it, as some described. I thought my libido was gone actually due to my cross-gender hormone treatment, but after getting off Effexor/Venlafaxine it returned.

Oh I just remembered something else: Coming off the drug had what I can only describe as 'withdrawal' type symptoms too, the thing I remember most was being utterly shattered tired (again not something I've ever come back from, but that might not be to do with the drug) and also getting pins and needles in random places but a lot in my face.
For all the negative stuff that goes round, on balance I was a very dark place and I think that if I hadn't have taken it I would definitely have CTB in a very painful and desperate manner indeed.

Thank you all for answering my question.

@Moonomyth - I really hope I don't feel the effects on my dreams ou described. I don't like remembering my dreams as usually after such ones I feel tired and unfocused throughout the day.

@Egddios @Grandexit - I get this "brain zaps" for about an hour after I take a pill - I just start shaking as if I am suddenly very cold. I actually find it kinda pleasant...I don't know what's wrong with me :D .

@Dead beat dad - I usually don't ahve a very high libido so that might not be a problem but still not cool to hear.

Overall for the past week that I have been taking the drug I do see some improvement in my mood, but still my irrational fears of stuff is too high, to a point in which I can not function properly. My brain fog has cleared a little too.
Probably have to mention that I also take another drug alongside venlafaxine, but I don'tknow what would its active agent be - in my country it's called chlorprotexine so this might also be helping.

Hi, I have been on venlafaxine for the last 5-6 years. Been gradually put up on the dose then asked to come down dosage last year and to be honest this is now me wanting to die more. Never had any bad effects from venlafaxine and I'm on the slow release, take it before bed.

I think the higher dose of 375mg was good for me as it kept me stable and now I have reduced it I feel suicidal and wanting to die again.
