If this were a gardening forum and a person came here interested in planting daffodils. Got knowledge on daffodils, and then went on to plant daffodils. Was it the knowledge surrounding daffodils gained that ensured the person would plant them? Or would they have planted them anyway as that was the reason for coming to a gardening forum? If it was suggested they planted Begonias instead and they didn't, is that the fault of the gardening forum or a choice? Does a gardening forum have any power to force a person to plant one thing over another? If gardening forums were not available would they still find a way to plant daffodils regardless, sourcing information elsewhere that academics rely on?
There was a survey done on this site that is telling. The survey asked. Do you believe suicidal people are given proper help by society? 95.7% said no. That right there is what the focus should be on. Not simply trying to ban hurting people from sharing their hurt and their wish to escape it.
Sites such as this would not have as many members as it does if maybe people weren't left to rot by broken systems that leave them in pain, or wind up damaged and marginalised by the very systems that are meant to help. Or have their abuse of 18 years trivialised to that is the past, while still being fucked by ghosts that live in their head. Or mental health issues had parity of esteem as physical maladies. Or did not have such stigmas attached or draconian legislation in place. Maybe if autonomy of choice had some value and rational suicide was explored maybe we could get closer to something more humane. Maybe the desperation then would not be quite so intense. The experience of being suicidal not quite so lonely. People like the above are part of the wider problem, not the solution. Reducing complicated issues to simplistic solutions that aren't even solutions just smacks of short sighted hubris.
None of these problems is improved by attempting to censor knowledge either. Which is an improbable task in the first place. Medical journals exist for a start, as do autopsy reports, and chemistry books, even Wikipedia. Attempting to shut down the ability for people to congregate and communicate, which is an enshrined right, has wider ramifications than a personal tragedy or even suicide. People in similar states seek each other out and will share knowledge regardless. We are not pedophiles violating the rights of others but choosing for ourselves.

You shouldn't waste too much time on these people. It's clear to me, just from reading these posts in that group, that these people have a very strong opinion on an emotional subject and they don't listen to reason - and they don't want to. They have an uninformed opinion and didn't do much research into the right to die movement and why we are in favor of it. These people have no nuance in their opinions regarding suicide. They condemn all of it, regardless of background and circumstances. They don't understand that harm reduction is a very important thing when it comes to suicide and that's one of the many reasons why this forum talks openly about resources and methods. It's similar to harm reduction in the context of drugs, for very simple reasons. There is a right way and a wrong way of doing it and the same applies to suicide. You can commit suicide with the most painful method that involves a high chance of survival with the highest possible risks of permanent damage to your body and brain. And you can commit suicide with a reliable, peaceful method that guarantees an exit without pain and suffering.
There are countless physical and mental conditions - and many other problems of social and financial nature - that make life unbearable for many different reasons and saying that none of them deserve a peaceful exit is very damn cruel and it makes them look like they're pro-suffering. This has nothing to do anymore with being pro-life or pro-choice. It's about relief of pain. Do they understand that? No, because they never seriously invested time and resources into this debate. If they can dismiss our struggle, talk down to us and label us as crazy people, because they apparently never had to contemplate about suicide before, that speaks for privilege... lots of privilege.
And to be honest, most people simply don't want to die hanging from a noose - and maybe have their family find them like that in the closet. There is no dignity with that. Most people want to die in dignity, not hanging from a door knob like a sack of potatoes. They don't want to jump in front of a train or from a building and drag other people into their suicide because that's gonna leave unrelated people traumatized. Maybe some don't want to die from a gun because it can leave you disfigured and it creates a big mess too. Do these people want us to commit suicide like that? Do they want us to suffer, maybe even survive and end up disabled for the rest of our life? That's why we talk about the best methods to commit suicide. We actually do this because we put a lot more thoughts into this process than any of you do. We think about the consequences of our actions and we want to prevent any harm to ourselves and others. That's why this forum exists, most of us that came to this place had the exact same thoughts as I just described and every(!) single person that ever registered in this forum so far registered on their behalf. Nobody forced them to do that. It was their conscious decision. Because they wanted to leave in peace. And that's their right, because these people are adults and we believe people have a right to decide about their time of death. Not me. Not you. Not a doctor. Nobody has the right to make this decision for someone else.
They also don't understand that people can make a conscious and informed decision about their right to die. It was the same story when Shawns mother spoke up against the forum, these people don't listen to our arguments. They argue from a very emotional and irrational point of view and smear us as murderers, creeps, sickos - whatever. So much empathy, right? And most of these people that oppose suicide come from a religious point of view, that's another fact - so maybe they should question their moral system before they judge others for taking a certain route in life. There is no mercy in their behavior. They'd rather see a struggling person suffer for the rest of their life than giving them a way to release the pain. And suicide is one of these ways to end the pain completely, when there are no methods to treat it otherwise - when life isn't worth struggling anymore. For most of us, the idea of death is relieving. And that's what it's about. Relief from pain. Suicide is a very personal decision and it's none of their business.Last edited:
