It should. Make sure it does not stretch too much. It would suck to do it and then balance on your toes...
If possible, get something as thick as your thumb for comfort. Less pressure on the skin.
Use a good slip knot. It gives enough pressure on the neck to knock you out quickly.

Depending on the type, you should be good. I'd reccomend kernmantle rope, it's strong, not excessively dense, and smooth. All the traits a noose / slipknot needs to help ensure success.
