I would have CTB years ago if it wasn't for my cat. I feel like buying a mountain of cat food and then CTB but then guilt overwhelms me.

Speaking from experience taking care of a pet can be quite the hassle at first and may cause more stress and anxiety which could make you want to CBT even more. However, if you can get past that and start to fall in love with your pet and your pet loves you back they can be a huge lifeline. I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for my cat. He came to me every single time I broke down in tears and kept me company and wouldn't leave until I was better. Before my first attempt he actually tried to comfort me and I blew up on him. I felt really bad, but in the end I failed and he was still there for me afterwards. It's a catch 22 really, he's my lifeline so once he goes I'm probably going to follow right after him.

Throughout most of my early life I've had a few dogs and they've helped a lot. The one that I was closest to died when I was 15 after my mother insisted on taking us all to stay with her sister in Turkey for a month. I hated my aunt and didn't want to go, then I come back to find my best friend had died while I was gone and even now all I can think about is how alone he must have felt. I don't know if it was him thinking we'd abandoned him or if my mother's husband didn't look after him (I'm inclined to believe the latter since the cunt literally threw his body in the bin). Hell, it wasn't long after that I first tried to ctb with an admittedly pathetic attempt to cut my wrists.

Even now, decades after it happened and it still brings me to tears. So pets are great while they're there, but they leave a big fucking hole when they're gone.

Aw, love... I am sorry you're suffering due to your loved ones. My heart goes out to you... I'd definitely recommend getting a pet while you have to stick it out, cute animals kinda help a bit. And you deserve to have the cute company!

Sending you all of my love and support.

Due to my age and familial circumstances (giant family), I'm forced to consider prolonging my stay on Earth for at least 4-5 more years. However, if I continue to live and suffer the way I have been, I surely will lose what's left of my mind and spirit. The only solution I can imagine is adopting an adult dog. Does owning an animal alleviate day-to-day suffering at all? Or is it a temporary cure to loneliness that has no long term effect on suffering?
I had a dog and it helped me. It gets you out and you meet/ talk to other people. Unfortunately you out live your loyal companion which is heartbreaking. I'd have another if I could but I work long hours and on my own. I personally think it helps, it is a big commitment but worth it.

My dog has kept me alive. He's literally my best friend and I care for him when I can't care for myself. I started hiking with him and now it's his favorite thing in the world. Today was an unusually nice day for winter, and even though I'm so low, I still took him on a nearby trail because I knew how happy he'd be.
I agree with what others have said about responsibility. If you think youd have trouble caring for it, it might be best to get something low maintenance.

In October, 2018, I had to surrender my Beagle to the rescue that I got him from because I could no longer care for him. It was horrible View attachment 22851
Update: After I surrendered Jack (in picture), we continued to pay for his medications, and I still volunteered with the rescue. On 7 January, they asked me to foster (short term) a 13 year old beagle who needed a home quickly.
He's fitting in well, and it feels good that I can still help dogs temporarily.

I have decided to adopt a Border Terrier and a ferret for my birthday, next june (before, I plan to be too busy). Young ones so they can fairly well acomodate to each other. In fact, both of their nature have hunter grounds in the first place, so the cohabitation can't come as natural otherwise.
I'll try my best to use a shelter instead of a breeding facility or worse, an animal store, even if there's to drive far across the country.
Can't wait to extend the family and share the daily with faithful reliable friends.
