Don't know if that has been recommended before but if his digestive system is messed up in any way he could add in extra energy/calories by drinking those high caloric nutritional drinks they sell on Amazon (fortimel or something).
It helps cancer patients not to lose any further weight and is digested pretty quickly.Another option, if the person isn't lactose intolerant, is just drink a gallon of whole milk a day. It's only like $3, so one of the cheapest options.
