This is probably the most random and oddly specific question that's ever been asked here but what the hell. I am genuinely interested. What was the turn of the millennium like for you? I was only 7 years old so I don't remember it. I would've liked to have been older and more aware in the 1990s and early 2000s.

I was like 23 or 24 around then. I was working in the strip club. Basically that was when my problems really began because I was starting to have all the issues really start to ruin my life with the undiagnosed borderline personality disorder. Back then the economy was much better and people still had hope for their futures. I didn't have hope even back then because I started to notice that I'm falling behind my peers in many areas.

I was still fully brainwashed at that time to the dangers of the government destroying everything. I was completely blind to psychiatry and how the medical profession is not really there to keep us healthy. I mean sure they provide some healthcare but I began to notice even back then that there was a two tier healthcare system one for the poor and one for those who could afford top of the line.

The over preoccupation with sex was really bad during that time. The hookup culture was out of control. It was a fun time but people were pretty reckless already at least in my home town. You could find amazing weed and many people were growing it. The drug scene was still pretty good. Cost of living was much more affordable. I was always taking road trips and shopping. I can't imagine trying to afford breast implants now.

We were laughing about computers still working after 1999 and that the world didn't end. We were adjusting to using four digits in our birth years. There were no NEETs. People had jobs, even kids had paper routes. We could wear our shoes through airport security and didn't have to worry about the size of liquid toiletry items in our carry on baggage. Reality television and social media weren't yet around (edit: MySpace was taking off, no Facebook yet). Newspapers were still a staple source of news. Cell phones were bigger and were used for making calls. Texting thumbs were not yet a cause for medical intervention. We rented videos from Blockbuster. Figuring out how to ctb was way harder.

It wasn't much simpler, it was still shitty, but not as shitty as now! The world was definitely better without the bullying pandemic that social media kicked off, better than before the 2008 financial crisis, and better before 9/11 gave governments more excuses to interfere in our daily lives and travel under the guise of "security."

Turn of the millennium? People were scared of Y2K, some joked about it though but others took it very seriously like the world would end. That was crazy.

The internet was very different, nobody texted on cell phones then and I had a pager anyhow. No Facebook yet. Not everyone could even afford a computer or internet connection at home. Pay phones were used. I feel like people used to talk to each other more. Information about suicide was garbage that we now know doesn't work. Many people were taking Prozac, pills were handed out like candy for damn near everything. Boy bands and pop music was everywhere. People were big into alien abduction movies though that was more in the 90s, like X-files. Rent was more affordable, I got by just fine in my first apartment alone on minimum wage while in college - it was laughable low compared to today's pay.

I had mostly figured out I probably wouldn't magically get better somehow and managed to keep going day by day. I can't say it was better but I had some hope then as a young adult. I do remember looking around in my late teens and being annoyed everyone was so happy and not troubled like myself. Knew I was screwed by 25 though.

Damn typing this made me feel old and depressed.

I was born in the late 60s and it feels like life has got more stressful since the late 80s in particular

Society has just got more and more fucked up
Bonds between neighbours vanished
Music has got more soulless and work has got more and more unsatisfying

Or maybe I'm just old

Millennium eve I just stayed indoors on my own getting drunk

None of you are old you're right music was better I'm 27 and I mostly listen to 80s music and watch old tv shows/movies from decades ago. You used the perfect word to describe entertainment in general today: soulless. Take Disney as an example. Have you seen comedy nowadays? cringeworthy.

I remember it pretty well even if I was only fourteen. Seems like a past life and yet very recent. Time stopped for me in the mid noughties so it doesn't seem twenty years ago yet it's clear it is by how much things have changed. Not for the better either and I now yearn for the lost years. That doesn't feel like the past this feels like the future

Damn right on all accounts. It was also a nightmare trying to fly right after 9/11, removing shoes and such because they thought people would make bombs. Speaking of, Columbine happened in 1999. That was everywhere on the news, magazines and papers. It may not seem like a big deal to younger generations now with the influx of shootings in recent years and because it was 21 years ago but back then it was massive news. I remember how terrified people were.

Twenty years ago I believed the world was my oyster, that good things happened to good people and that you can achieve anything if you try hard enough.

Fast forward 20 years and you find the woman in my avatar.

HIMYM is a good example of that. Reminds me of something that would be on the Disney channel. So utterly witless it could only be aimed at children

It was a glorious time to be alive. The proliferation of tech was nonexistent. We had Usenet which was like forums. People for the most part were working and those who weren't were not enabled to continue being unemployed. No one was offended about every little thing. The president was hosing an intern and football players were killing their ex-wives. There was no "reality" TV but we had plenty of daytime trash shows like Jerry Springer and such. Music was still good although the alternative scene was in its twilight and punk was going commercial. Comparatively, things are cheaper now but they still weren't too bad. People made and lost fortunes on this new internet thing. The cool kids learned how to share music and movies and other files which made Metallica mad. It would take hours to download a CD and even longer to rip a movie. Celebrities weren't overtly political, Hollywood didn't shit out remakes every three years and prime time television was still family friendly. TV Networks made their Identity off it, the bigggest being ABC and their "TGIF" block of programming. There was still modesty; to most in my social circle, sex was a big deal. We all wanted it, we all talked like we did but no one was getting much. The girls who gave it away you didn't want to be associated with and the ones who you did want to be around weren't putting out. I remember my first time at 13 with an older HS girl. She was of questionable repute and not one of the "it" girls but it was a huge deal because I had gotten what no one else had.

Drugs were awesome. The pot wasn't as strong so you could get the full experience and not just be uselessly stoned. Coke was king and heroin wouldn't kill you as fast as it does today. MDMA was new and scared a lot of us from horror stories we heard. Regardless, we rolled. Prescription Opiates weren't nearly a problem like they are today and methamphetamine was for bikers and truck drivers. If we wanted up, we took bennies. Quaaludes were gold and I miss them.

I didn't have time to think about CTB I was too busy living the best years of my life. I watched a lot of friends die; car crashes, overdoses, murders and suicides but it was just part of life. We had a guy CTB by fire at our HS before classes started and we continued like it was any other day. The things I did and saw have came back to haunt me in later years. I have permanent damage from my years of "clean living". I was stabbed, my body is beaten and broken, I took every substance known to man and suffered through withdrawal, legal consequences, heartbreak and soul shredding sorrow.

I had all of the freedom and none of the responsibilities. That freedom allowed me to distract from what I didn't know was Borderline Personality. I moved between social groups and experienced so much in just a few short years.

Everyone was so much more accepting; I would spend one night in the ghetto and the next with skinheads. All anyone wanted was to have a good time. The cops were different. They didn't break your balls about everything but if you smarted off, they'd tune you up and you were better for it. I don't recall anyone ever being sectioned. Mental health was nonexistent. People just dealt with their shit and relied on their friends to get them through the hard times.

We all knew about problems in the world but they were the world's problems. The US would lob a few missiles into the desert and that would calm things down. There were dictators but they kept the lids on their sewers so no one cared. That all came crashing down on Sept. 11. The world just got more evil after that. Our freedoms were taken by politicians, people chose sides and looked for any way to zap the others. It was now right against left. Black against white, male against female and all the infighting amongst the subgroups. Everyone was given an audience, everyone was validated and used against others. Like the cops who smacked you around for being a dumbass, Gone was common sense.

it was a great time and I miss it

Haha I remember Lars Ulrich from Metallica on MTV having a fit about Napster. Your entire post reminded me of so much. Hours for a CD? I had to wait hours for a song to download on my crappy 56 K modem. No CD burner, too fancy :haha: reminds me also when DVDs first became somewhat common around 2002, they were so expensive. And TVs were like a box, no flat screen. Blockbuster was definitely a thing, @mediocre.

I never could get into that scene, partly because it just wasn't too big around here, but the spectacle of it all was something else. I loved rolling the few times I did it.

Before that, everyone just went to drinking clubs where guys would get aggressive and start fights. Girls would wake up with a stranger and possibly an STD. E and raving changed all that.

I was very optimistic about the future.

Had just bought my own house, loved being able to listen to a CD in the car on my way home from Look & Listen in Boksburg.

Never went to nightclubs much as the bouncers in that era were brutal, they could pretty much beat you to death with no consequences.

Very little sex.

You could still hitch hike! Divorced parents were not common. Porn was a big deal. Prank calls were possible. Cussing actually had an impact. Driving was fun. You could tresspass in abandoned buildings much easier. Clothes were way better. Toys were better. There were BOOK STORES!!! There were cigarette machines and getting adults to buy alchohol outside of gas stations was easy.

In the year 2000 I was facing multiple court cases,a bad break up,felt like the world was against me and wanted to ctb..I stuck it all out((mostly due to the support system I had at that time)).I remember hoping the Y2K conspiracy,or bug or whatever, would cause the end of the world(or at least knock my court records off the computer).

Here I am in 2020,another "disaster" stuation, chicken pecking on a suicide site.Im glad I didnt leave back then,I would have missed out on alot of shit I needed to do.

I thank you for this thread...You've stimulated my thoughts and kicked me in the head, whether you knew it or not.
