Being in debt with over 90k would alone be a reason for some to kill themselves. This is disgusting and I don't have any words for it.

Reminds me of a joke:

"There are three type of capitalist:

The 1st capitalist sees you drowning in a river and saves you, then charges you for his services.

The 2nd one offers his help for a fee upfront or will leave you for dead.

The 3rd one threatens to drown you in a river if you don't pay him not to."
You mean socialists, free market capitalism is mutual exchange that benefits both parties equally and there is no losers. Socialists will provide services u don't even want, force u to participate at gun point, and it's not a guarantee u will get what u paid for. Social security is an example of a socialist program that is a scam and many people will not get this as promised. We're taught in schools that capitalism is what is immoral when it's actually socialism that causes mass poverty and death. Nothing in life is free but socialists push the idea that u can live at the expense of other people. That might work for a little while but it's not sustainable longterm.

"But but but socialism is bad"
you know, it's understandable that people think like that when you realize tens of billions of dollars were spent over the span of a (almost) century for PR firms to misinform the public about such things.

Marx, Chomsky, Chris Hedges, Richard Wolf. Read any of them cause I don't have the energy for this.

Also, social security is not socialist, because socialist are opposed to welfare (as a long-term strategy) for various reasons. This "Democratic Socialism" isn't at all socialist, it's left-leaning state capitalism. Socialism at its root is about democratizing labour.

To add to my previous reply, there was a young man in with us that had attempted by shooting himself. He had the gun in his mouth and only failed because his girlfriend found him and tackled him. The bullet exited his left cheek. He's got a helluva scar now, I am sure. He came in after and was discharged before myself and my fellow patient who had insurance.
The system is a money racket. I state this as my opinion based on personal experience.

It's this kind of stuff that fuels my suicidality in general.

They call this "externalizing", but how the F are you supposed to just ignore this stuff or accept it? Especially if YOU'RE the one with the $93,000 bill.

I guess I shouldn't talk because it's not like I'm actually doing anything about this, other than venting to a group of people who feel the same way.

The government are hypocrites. They do everything they can to prevent you from suiciding yet here they are throwing you in an even worse pit than death if your suicide attempt fails. This is honestly just some petty revenge fantasy against suicide survivors because they almost lost a major potential source of money that will only benefit the 1% and that source of money is your existence.

Everyday I hate more and more of how society works I swear.

Not only that, they refer to the family members and friends of people who ended their lives as suicide survivors. I can't imagine them referring to the family and friends of patients stricken with cancer or any other terminal illness as survivors.

I guess I'm a survivor and veteran of the Korean War because my grandad fought in it.

I'm also a survivor of dementia because my grandmother had it before she passed away.

My family would get triggered and pull out the rude and disrespectful card if I said these things but they expect it to be ok if they do the same exact thing with Suicide. The flawed logic hurts.

god it's almost as if they're punishing the person for having made an attempt on their life... yeah, that really serves to help them

Well... that sure will make them happy that they survived. Here in Canada, pretty much everything is covered. I know after a hospitalization for a suicide attempt I received a bill for the ambulance but it was only about $65. It feels shitty though surviving an attempt/near-death experience and being billed for it afterwards. It must feel even worse for loved ones when the person dies in hospital and they are sent a bill.
A 3 mile ambulance ride costed me over $800, and that's after insurance paid some of it.

That's terrible. I guess I should consider myself lucky. Sorry you had to deal with that after already going through more than enough.

US healthcare bills are scary. I have been in ambulance twice (nothing too serious) dont remember getting any bill of those. Usually when I have to go to the doctor for some things, inspection, blood and urine tests, x-rays or something, it's always the same, around 16€ or so, which is under 20 dollars. then again, I live in a country where taxes are high, so I guess that explains a lot but still.. Those numbers are insane.

Of course our healthcare is expensive as with everything else! You do not understand the severe mental pain the 1% have to go through if they can't go on 1 Million Expensive vacations per month and spend thousands on hundreds of antique dishes they're never going to use! Also if they eat out any place that isn't a 5 star restaurant for one night they will die from an severe erection! It's absolutely sad and devastating!

sarcasm I repeat sarcasm

I can not complain about my country (Brazil) in relation to this. When I had a CTB that went wrong I did pay nothing for the hospital. Then I did treatment with psychiatrist and medication all paid for by the public health system.

I owed thousands last year. I recently just paid off the last bill in collections. I got some help from the hospital after applying to their debt relief program but every doctor sends you a separate bill & then there was the ambulance. It causes so much stress. Waking up alive, getting crappy care and then owing loads of money. The "it gets better" platitudes don't pay the bills. It's like punishment. If they want people to succeed after an attempt (or going to the hospital to "keep yourself safe") let the loads of people pushing life foot the bill and surround a person with effective aftercare.

Does anyone know how it works if I am an American and travel to Canada to suicide? Would my family still be sent a bill for things like ambulance?

I don't know and if you were wondering about assisted suicide, then I don't think Canada allows suicide tourism. Their laws are only designed for Canadian citizens to access them and most likely you'd have to be terminally ill to get euthanasia.

No I have N I was just wondering if I should drive over the border before I drink it in case anything were to go wrong. Would I get a $90k hospital bill because I'm not a Canadian citizen or how would that work? Curious if anyone has any insight
