I'm just curious how people that do erotic asphyxia by themselves generally don't die. What is it about their setup that helps prevent this? I'm NOT asking because I am into this but because I want to do partial and make sure my set up IS successful. I figured this may give me a clue on how not to fail. If they pass out from something tight around their neck, how do they assure they will wake up. I want to assure I don't wake up.

I'm only guessing, but I think most of the erotic asphyxia people don't intend to die so most of them are careful to leave themselves a reliable escape. I would imagine the ones that die doing this kind of rushed into it and didn't take safety into account.

I am just wondering if they pass from constriction around their neck, like from a rope, how do they assure they become conscious again?

I think they use a quick release knot. Do they can just pull it loose as they're "finishing". It doesn't always work and they end up dying.

Oh OK. That makes sense. I know someone that did die from this many years ago but the family told everyone it was a suicide because they were embarrassed.

Not sure how NSFW this is gonna be, kinda depends on sensibility, I'll spoiler just in case:
You want to almost pass out and orgasm at the same time. Ideally, you orgasm before passing out (but right before that) and then you release whatever contraption you have created to asphyxiate yourself. You get the timings wrong and you're dead.

Yes. You use your "free hand" to hold the rope, which is looped around a doorknob, a hook on the door, or the entire door, and is then wrapped around your neck as a ligature. If you pass out, your off hand lets go, releasing the tension, and you regain consciousness.

Some of the accidental deaths I've seen used fixed knot on their anchor point and tried to tighten the rope or belt by leaning in to it slowly so they can still breath but when when they lose consciousness extra pressure would be added tightening it even more and blocking everything on the neck. A good strategy for suicide but not if you're planning to see the light of day. Ligature is supposed to be set up in a way it loosens when you lose consciousness, usually held by hand.

Or even pressing carotids by hand, once consciousness is lost, pressure is reliably lost

One would need a partner for that. Holding pressure till they pass out then let go. The need for ligature I guess is to work around that issue.

I'm not sure. I heard rumours that a former teacher went out like this.

Ricky Gervais does a funny sketch on it...

The first rule for safe erotic asphyxiation is: "Never play alone!" Anyhow it is much more fun with a like minded partner. If you have no partner there is always the risk to end as an autoerotic accident.
