Just following up on this. I'm making bone broth from tomorrow for the first time. Wish me luck.

Edit: Any tips on storage would help immensely. I don't want to buy a whole case of special jars.

I freeze my broth to store it. You might want to make very dense broth for this, so it takes up less space in your freezer, and you can dilute it with hot water when you are ready to eat it.

i've gotten back into eating a tablespoon of sauerkraut everyday for my gut health, small noticeable improvements. recently also purchased beef liver since i watched a video on niacin and its benefits on mental health.
sweet potatoes are my jam. they make my skin and hair look better too so it definitely helps with some self image issues..

do you drink matcha at all? or chai?

That's cool, man. I have heard great things about organ meats and have thought many times about integrating that into my diet. Sadly it's not readily available where I am. I tried eating sauerkraut as well but the available ones near me are all pasteurised, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I love chai. Right now I've been drinking a lot of herbal and black teas. I still drink coffee though. I'm having a very difficult time stopping it.

Lentils, chickpeas and various beans (berlotti, butter beans, kidney beans etc) are a stable for me, and a very clean source of protein. It's so easy to cook them into curries, chilis, stews, soups, you can even make ragu, pasta sauces or have it with rice.

I feel you. I'm trying to eat healthier and lose weight. Food is a crutch for me. My goal is based more on calorie intake then just health foods. I eat moderately healthy already but I have a bread addiction lol. I struggle more late at night.

Omg, me too, girl. Me. Too. Night time is just the worst. It also doesn't help that I watch mukbangs just to feel less deprived (turns out it works in the opposite direction). It's been a bumpy ride since I started this new dietary regime. I broke down several times to big macs but the worst mistakes are out of my system. Here's to hoping! Let's keep "meeting" on this thread for support.

haha It works the opposite for me too. I'm pretty much am on the edge of binge eating disorder. I've always had a pretty bad relationship with food so it's been a journey to say the least. I've been wanting to drop some depression weight I've been carrying for awhile now.

Definitely. I think buddies help when it comes to changing habits. I somehow met my goal and pushed past my cravings for the night tonight. Big win.

Congrats, amiga. Let us find a non-food reward for such small victories as these. Mine is a nice big spray of CBD oil under the tongue to get me mildly stoned.

Hell yea! I use to have CBD but I can't afford it at the moment. What brand do you use? I'll reward myself with some thc. I actually had such a good day in general. I did like 8 hours of studying for an exam and did my calorie limit.

I'm inspired to eat more appropriate amounts as well. I need to lose about 25 lbs. Good luck tonight. I promise I won't eat anything else today.

Contemplating cheating. This is hard shit.
do you have a cheat day? i have autoimmune issues, so gluten is something i'm trying to cancel out since it makes me feel worse but it's HARD especially since it's winter where i live. i'm thinking of giving myself a day of the week of planned glutening where i can eat bread & shit lol

I failed badly yesterday. It is very hard.

I usually do intermittent fasting and that helps. Apparently once you start eating your body will release the hunger hormone.

Found a nice gluten-free bread alternative today so I can enjoy burgers free of guilt and inflammation. Sometimes you have to find workarounds, as human willpower is uncomfortably finite. In this process of eliminating breads, grains, dairy and adding them back in, I've unfortunately discovered I'm intolerant to various things, including cheap frying oils (rapeseed) and of course gluten.

Going to do fast this week as well, @Hindsightis2020! In solidarity with you!

I'm giving it a go again. If I can get 1 straight week in I think I'll have the momentum going. I have an overeat and restart tomorrow problem.

I'm glad you like the gluten free option! If you haven't tried probiotics yet I have one that worked well for me for food intolerance. I guess it's important to have a good microbiome. I had to give up gluten for like a year but I reintroduced it after improving my gut. I can't do dairy at all. I never could and I took way too long to finally let it go.

Stayed in my goal today! I mean I did get take out yesterday but hey, one day at a time. I hope your day is going well. No pressure in the Eating Better topic because I feel like when I put too much pressure on myself I do worse. I just try to flow with it. I do need to get some consistency going.

Yes I have been taking probiotics among other supplements. Definitely trying to focus on gut health with zero concern for calorie counting, for better or worse. I've been keeping a food and supplement spreadsheet/journal which helps me be more aware of what I'm eating, but I'm inconsistent in my logging. Oh well.

Happy day for substitutes! As for dairy, I have heard most people are actually intolerant and arent aware of it. The hormones in dairy milk freak me out so I steer clear of that stuff easily but I admit I miss cheese when I'm making nachos.😅

Definitely this should be a zero pressure, high motivation situation. We ain't trying to develop more issues with food around here!

I'm not particularly invested in recovery for mental health, but to stop so many of my chronic health issues.

I've decided soon to try my best despite my negative environment and people around me to try and eat better. I want to focus on eating dark leafy greens, vegetables, legumes, and probiotic foods like natural yogurts and kefir, etc. I am looking forward to it as I've gained too much weight and I feel extra crappy. I also want to quit drinking coffee.

Anyone else contemplating a nutritional switch?

Only thing is the budget. I have to figure out a way to do it without breaking the bank.
I have neurological issues that require me to have a higher fat content, lower carb content and medium to low protein content. I was put on the keto diet back in the mid 60's by my doctors when I was a small child. This diet works well for me but it EXTREMELY hard to keep on, especially the last 20 years as EVERYTHING has sugar and wheat in it, EVERYTHING and when you live on the road in a truck that is pretty much all you have for choices. We have been off the road now since August but our finances are such that I am not able to afford to eat the way I should and have not only gained massive weight but have had diareha and pissing bubbles since before thanksgiving because we can only afford for me to eat processed wheat crap full of sugar, the wrong kind of fat and way too much protein. Clean meats and fresh vegatables are exspensive and you have to have a fridge to maintain them or a way to go shopping everyday and when you live a 45 min drive from the nearest city and hubby takes the car every day, then, wheat and crap that makes me sick is what it is. Would I think less about ctb if I wasn't shitting creamy white explosive shit 4-6 times a day and having all the cramps of glass shards tearing through my intestines, cause that is pretty much what celiac disease feels like when you eat wheat, maybe, but even when I am on the keto diet, a size 6 in great shape, I still think about ctb all the time, too many other things besides diet to make me think about ctb. I can tell you for sure that eating right for your body does indeed help you feel physically better and to some extent mentally clearer.

I can totally sympathize with this. It is such a shame that so many of us get priced out of access to quality food/nutrition.

Is there possibly a local co-op near you where you can either work there in exchange for free produce/food? There are also some cities in America where you can pay a small monthly fee and they will deliver a myriad of fresh, local in season produce to you at your door on a monthly basis. Certainly it wouldn't be keto, but it could take the edge off financially. This would of course depend on your specific location. I have tried to keep nutrition while living without a kitchen/fridge and yes, it can be nearly impossible.

Perhaps you can research fasting in order to allow your gut to heal somewhat between consumption of wheat/gluten. Just throwing that out there. Of course I'm not a nutritionist/doctor/dyor, etc. etc. Also, an alternative solution is to see if there's a local co-op near you where you can either work there in exchange for free produce/food. Intermittent fasting is all I am able to do right now, I eat once a day, about the time my blood sugar drops so low I get the shakes. I used to fast at least one or two days a week and actually fasted for three months a few years ago to loose over 100 pounds and reset my system.
Fasting works for me when I am healthy, right now, something is going on, my poop should not almost white, maybe liver or pancrea and every time I try to fast I get really sick. I know my body is basically starving to death despite my excessive weight because I am not absorbing nutrients like I should be, due mostly I am sure to wheat, but the last three times I tried to fast to reset myself I got really really sick so until I can get funds to visit the doc, or I end up in the er it is what it is.
BTW, it is nice to find someone who understands fasting can be beneficial, most people freak out when they find out I fast.

Yeah, fasting is somewhat controversial in addressing health (and specifically digestive) issues. I actually edited and removed the fasting suggestion from my comment to you, fearing that I could be unwittingly causing disordered eating or some other unintended outcome, especially being unaware of your history/possible relationship with food. But there is overwhelming clinical research showing that it is effective in managing blood sugar, controlling weight, and there is some emerging evidence suggesting that it can address intestinal permeability. So I guess take of that what you will and I'm glad it's helping you.

In any case, I have found that one underlying cause for many of my ailments is leaky gut, so this is another avenue to research. I'm happy to brainstorm with you, my inbox is always open.
