As a female, you are meant to be so stupid and shallow that any mention of the words "pretty" or "popular" is supposed to make you immediately snap your behavior in line with whatever the people around you want from you.
Did you not get the memo?

For me it's always "But you're so pretty when you smile."
Holy fuck, I am 45 years old, not 5.
Eurgh. Despise that. Worked in many bars and been told that horseshit far too often. Noted that it was always certain type of man... Initial thought? Gods I want to punch you. The other one that infuriated was "cheer up, it might never happen" I mean, where do you start with such stupidity?*

*quite often this was said when I wasn't even feeling grumpy. Sure as heck was after though!

It'd make an ounce of sense if I was a woman. The whole "you exist just to be seen and fucked every so often" thing some very perverse men have going on.
It'd make sense if one of those fucks would tell me that. I am, however, a dude with a hobo beard. I am not pretty whether or not I smile to begin with. There is, however, one specific guy who encourages me to be "pretty".
My go to response to that fellow is "fuck off, mate", or reminding him that I always am within an arm's radius of a knife.
How women manage to keep themselves from pouncing one of those fucks and slash his throat is beyond my comprehension. I'd end up in jail by the age of like... 15.

Curious how people here experience the problem of being expected to smile all the time. Do people ever command you to smile? Are you good at it? Does it make you feel better or worse?

One night this week i was with a girl lying next to each other. I had my poised/stare into oblivion/fuck everything face on as per usual cause at nighttime im just at my worst mental state. She knows my mind is just far gone at that point but her kindness tries to cheer me up by using her fingers to put my lips into a smile. It was so heartwarming yet i just couldn't help but do anything more than make an attempt at a kinder and understanding face (can't find a suitable smiley as an example) anyway i adore her for doing her very best and i feel bad/worse for not being able to give into it. She is just the most kind and beautiful person i've ever layed eyes upon. I can't begin to describe how gutwrenching it is being so far gone and done with life and being next to her at the same time. (She's payed companionship but it's obvious i guess from the post) it's so mindboggling how i go destroy myself by going there yet i crave a person in my arms so bad knowing when i go home i'll just be at my worst and thinking about plowing my car in a bridge support pylon(i'd never do it that way though). Anyway those few nights every month is all that i care for anymore .. knowing full well it destroy's me at the same time.

Everyday i stray further from life... Everyday i wonder when i finally be able to say goodbye to this world.

Ah fuck it i'm unable to describe my thoughts properly. Sorry for the ramble. This went way offtopic.

Moreso when I was younger. Now I'm all moody and crotchety, and I'll soon be the one telling the young whippersnappers to smile (just kidding, I don't give a shit what they do).

It's part of a banal socialization process. They don't want for you to be more upbeat they want the opposite, they want your own disengagment from the world and a disconnection from the present.

I haven't smiled in about 20 years. Don't give a fuck if people suggest I smile, I just fart in their general direction

People don't have to remind me that, because I trow fake smiles all the time in professional settings or when I meet people I know on the streets, because it's a social obligation in terms of politeness in France . It's impossible not to smile to people here, otherwise you can be seen as rude and inconsiderate, so I just accept it to avoid social death.

yes, i get told this way too often. it makes me feel awkward as fuck to be called out on it. being told anything along the lines of the following makes me go silent and start panicking:
  • "you have a beautiful smile, i just wish i could see it more."
  • "wow do you ever have a judgmental face."
  • "are you mad at me?"
  • "bad day?"
and as for faking joy, i've even had people tell me i look sad while i was actively attempting to present as happy. evidently i can't fake it convincingly enough.

I do NOT like being told to smile. It doesn't happen that often anymore, though.

I've started responding with "Why? So you can feel better about not actually helping me?". Rarely happens now.

Before a year.. i was severely depressed.
I was getting trained for a job. A girl elder than me was getting trained for the role of a team leader.
They were making us do some activities.. which is.. we need to speak about the person sitting beside us. And she said that i need to smile a bit more.
I was really pissed off.. i really wanted to slap her right there.
I was struggling to keep myself sane.. and she says i need to fake smile for others. Thats none of her business.
