I was once a pretty angel

I was talking to my shrink the other day and her approach these days seems to be to compliment me. She asked was I ever complimented growing up by my family. I said no, I'm from a dysfunctional family, we don't do this sort of thing. I was wondering how it is for you. Were you ever complimented when growing up and now as well on your accomplishments?

I wouldn't put any stock in compliments from a mercenary that gets paid to care about your troubles.

Yes but it never meant anything. I view it as manipulative

No, my family never complimented me growing up. I had a terrible mother and a distant father. I guess that's why I have no self-love and I have abandonment issues.

yes.

I'm mostly immune to compliments. because I don't really care about them. unless I did something cool. then I'll take then.

I was rarely complimented growing up. I find that I have mostly been complimented at work by coworkers over the past decade or so. Lately a few coworkers have called me a genius based on the type of work I do. I'm not sure I 100% agree but whatever.

I recall others (friends/strangers) complimenting me when I was younger usually on my vibrant eyes or olive skin I don't remember complements from my direct family, now days I dont really believe when people say nice things about me i often feel like it's forced or lies, my mother's usually come with criticism but my father's are genuine.

Yes, but I have trust issues so I don't believe compliments. I think it is someone trying to get something from me/subtle manipulation. That or just saying it without actually meaning it/forced.

I get what you mean. It's almost like people are projecting an expectation on you that can be even more detrimental when it's wrong. For example being told you look happier or that you are so smart can make it feel like there is more pressure to meet that expectation whether either of you believe it or not.

I was a smart kid so yeah: compliments until it became expected. Outside of that, a few appearance related growing up that I hated (did not like how I looked growing up and still don't really), and some performance related that my perfectionism wouldn't let me believe (because I can see what's wrong). I still kinda feel like it's not really meant when complimented so I genuinely don't know how to take it most of the time.

There was one time I felt genuinely complimented though when a random carhop said she thought I was handsome at a Sonic 4 years ago. Her delivery is what sold it and actually made me cry later at home.

Friend said "How did you turn out so nice?" after I talked about some trauma.

It was the first time someone called me that and she said it very...confidently? Like she really believed it. I had (have) a hard time grasping it but it meant a lot to me.
