This is more about questioning the feasibility of it than actually doing it. I know a lot of people on here struggle with suicide for family reasons and some of those might be worried about the guilt suicide may impose. Wouldn't death by misadventure be a good way to avoid that? Say you have an interest in hiking, you do a difficult trail, reach the top of a cliff or something, and then jump off. I doubt it will be seen as more than an accidental death via stepping too close to the edge or something similar rather than an intentional jump so long as you nothing indicative of depression or plans of suicide (ie. self harm marks, a letter, etc.).

This is just something that popped in my head today. I live in a state that's very hilly, people love hiking, there's pretty high up cliffs, like the following.

There are some like this around Montana
1714585875237

Or some like this in Colorado
1714585608274

Or if you're more in the southern regions, there's this in Tennessee
1714585433388

Or this in Alabama
1714585473018

I don't know how it would work, but I think it would be a somewhat decent method so long as you're high enough to pass upon impact. Feel free to share opinions, it's the reason I marked this as discussion.

I considered this. I was considering taking a selfie video and walking backward then "falling". Pretend I just lost footing and didn't know where the edge was. A good way for people who want it to look like an accident.

You could definitely get away with this. I live near a suicide spot, and when reading inquests regarding the deaths there for research purposes, there were a few consistent things I noticed that had coroners labelling potential suicides as misadventure instead.

These include: importantly no note, no witnesses, and no personal items "left behind" and no medical history of mental health, but I saw many cases where those with a mental health history still had their deaths labelled as misadventure: even in this instance where thjs place is a known suicide spot. It's all circumstantial. I also read that a lot of coroners prefer to use misadventure in most cases where they can as it's seen as the most empathetic and compassionate outcome for families.

If it is what you want to do, I believe you can easily set it up to look like an accident as long as you're ok with leaving no note behind, and leaving your loved ones without a goodbye or "closure."

Best wishes for your peace.

My medical notes say I'm at high risk of death by misadventure so it's definitely valid. If I thought my health would allow me to get into a remote area, I would consider giving it a go. The massive downside would be the uncertainty of instant death vs draw out suffering, life changing injuries, and the consequential risk to mountain rescue crews who would inevitably be called out to search, not to mention waste of their limited resources if my endeavours were successful and in looking for me, they were unable to go to the aid of someone who wanted to live.

Feasibility would depend which one you chose I guess. How far can you fall uninterrupted? The big issue with most mountains is you hit things on the way down. And the downside of failure is just about unimaginable.

I don't intend on doing this, especially not any time soon. More of a morbid question of the feasibility of it rather than me actually considering it.

Yeah that's the only terrible flaw, you would have to get high enough and not have your fall broken by anything, which is difficult considering trees in some areas. Even some of the photos display that.

The waste of search resources is also definitely a thing if you were successful. I think a fall from a cliff would be fatal regardless, but as you mentioned, it could be long and drawn out all depending on the circumstances.
