Would be better to put her into a shelter yourself incase she does not get found after a while. Unless you're confident she will be seen when you're found and that it will not be too long.

I have 4 cats. One of the reasons why I am still here. Please make arrangements beforehand. Call a rescue or shelter.

Okay so this is what will happen in my case, this can be perhaps a bit helpful: I've wrote a letter for the police and wrote down the phone number from one of my friends (she has promised me that she'd do her best for my pets if I ctb), she will have a look whether it will be possible or not to take my pets in.
If not, then I've suggested that it's worth a try to ask or my parents will be willing to take my pets.
If it's not possible for my parents to take them in then my friend will do her best to find lovely homes for my pets.
I wrote down that I prefer that my pets will stay at a foster home instead of being immediately put in a shelter.

Regarding how long it would take until someone will know that you passed if you live alone like me:
I got the option of having a member of SS ringing the police a few hours after I took SN & it's possible to write a delayed email to my water and gas supplier to ask them to send the police to my home due what happened.

I feel like it'd be better to release it outside, maybe someone will end up taking it in. Cats are extremely independent and I think it'd survive just fine outside. I have a cat in my neighborhood that someone owns and it freely roams around, I've seen it kill a lot of smaller animals to fend for itself.

I have a blind cat and live in New York. She wouldn't last a second outside. ;)

Can you share a picture? I wish I could have a kitty but I'm really allergic. We should have a thread where we share our pets :)

I would try to rehome her before you ctb. It's not nice for her to be in a shelter. Maybe you can find her a new family through classifieds etc

We SS-ers should have such shelters.
I wouldn't even mind taking the same euthanasia medication as the pets do

Do NOT, whatever you do, just release a house cat to fend for itself outside!!!

You have a responsibility to make sure your animals are taken care of.
I have postponed ctb for 5 years because I refused to abandon my dog.

There are plenty of no kill shelters and recue groups that will take your pet and find it a loving home.

Rescue organizations are usually "no-kill" and won't euthanize.
PM me if you want info about rescues vs. Shelters
If you are able to volunteer/be a donor before you ctb, a rescue will be more amenable to your "need to surrender due to ill health"

Also, if you have a good relationship with a vet clinic, they may help you if you mention that your health is deteriorating. They will help with rehoming—not N! lol

So called "no kill" shelters are kind of a scam. They just send their animals to shelters that do kill when they can't find homes for them. There are way more animals that need homes than there are people that can take them in so the reality of it is that a majority of animals that end up in shelters are euthanized.

That all depends on which organizations and where you live.
We absolutely have no kill shelters here in Canada.

For dogs: Never use the classifieds—-that is how dog fight rings get "bait dogs".

I volunteer with a no kill dog rescue that has facilitated 2500 adoptions since 2003 without bouncing any to other shelters, so they are not all scams.

I dunno, it logistically doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe if you live somewhere where the number of animals being brought to shelters is relatively low or the shelter is selective of how many animals they take in. I'm not doubting either of your accounts. But I wouldn't trust any stats of any particular place at face value because lot of these places are just moving the animals around.

Good for Canada in that respect, but the clubbing to death of thousands of seal pups appals Brigitte Bardot, me, and millions of other folk around the world.

Most Canadians would agree.
At least our leader didn't just give hunters permission to go into dens and kill bears while they sleep.

We use foster homes extensively, and so we are able to keep our shelter census low. We use the internet and several local chapters across the country to facilitate nationwide adoptions. Because we have a good reputation, we have partnerships with several airlines, and that helps, too.

If you could get him rehomed in a loving environment then that would obviously be the best option.
Could you post something on facebook, etc ?
I guess you can just tell people that you have a terminal illness....
Perhaps you might want to do that ahead of time, and if the rehoming doesn't work out, then you might decide on the option below.
You could also try to rehome via a shelter, but retain the option of euthanasia if the rehoming doesn't succeed within a certain time period.

Euthanasia is also a viable option in my view, because :

> It will be painless and peaceful, plus they'll be spared the unhapiness of having to miss you.
> They'll be spared future suffering of ill health and cat old age.
> You can both cross over together into the afterlife.....
> A cat is a spiritual being, and that being would understand that you needed to do what you did, and that you took the best action for both of you.....
If you went that route then I suppose you would just tell the vet you have a terminal illness.

I have been doing animal rescue for many years, and I know that there are many well run and caring organizations out there. Many do specialize in a certain type of pet and sometimes even a specific breed. When they adopt out they usually do some type of background check and onsite visit before they give the pet over.

Please please please do rehome your cat before leaving. I volunteered at a cat shelter and I can tell you that cats are effected by seeing their owner dead. Please please please get in touch with a shelter or foster service before you leave. The only reason I have not CTB is because of my cats

I do not agree. You are forcing your will onto the cat. The cat should be free to continue their life. There WILL be someone who will take on the cat.
