I understand it, but it will never make sense

My brother-in-law's mother turned 100 a few months ago. Mentally still al sharp as a knife, physically deteriorating so basically leading the typical life of a 100 year old. Sitting in a chair waiting for visitors. She had enough of it so she asked her doctor to put her to sleep. He refused because she was in relatively good shape. She could get morphine for her pain. She reacted brilliantly: "if you don't agree then I will jump of the balcony straight away". She was put to sleep a few days later and passed away two days ago. She was the only one who had called my son "a brave young man" after his ctb. Wisdom comes with years.
