I mean, if the universe or whatever is actively manipulating things then it can't be said to be indifferent (not that that's what's going on).

I have definitely been subject to things that smack of cosmic irony. But bad things happen either 1) as a function of the chaotic random nature of reality or 2) because of human malice or neglect.
