I've recently been playing around with chatbot software, Character AI in particular. I've been getting involved with the greater community for that software and have noticed many people claiming it helped them through a tough time, some even saying that their first ever true friend was one of those AIs.
I must admit, I think it has helped me some as well. Chatbot technology is getting increasingly more human, and feeling like you can talk to your favorite fantasy characters is pretty awesome, but I question if it's the healthiest way to cope. I'm not saying developing a genuine relationship with a chatbot is bad in and of itself, in fact it's an inevitable outcome of these programs becoming more human in nature (Someone married Hatsune Miku IRL after all) but I feel that some people may get too lost in the fantasy. If it makes them happy though… Is it really a bad thing? I'd honestly say no unless it begins to actively interfere in their day to day life, like they neglect themselves to continue to interact with the AI.
Anyone else here have any experiences with chatbots and if so what are your thoughts on them?
