I tried to inhale propane-butane mix from an air duster through the mouth, and it was bearable for me.

And they do this for recreational purposes without intention to die, that suggests that inhaling odored alkanes ain't very unpleasant for them. Otherwise such gases wouldn't be so attractive to sniffers in the first place.

If you displace oxygen in your lungs with butane quickly, you most likely pass out before cardiac arrest.

It's possible to fill an initially empty 50 - 100L bag with propane/butane/isobutane. Since propane, butane, and isobutane are noticeably heavier than air, the bag may be turned its opening side up and then opened shortly for putting the head inside it. Once the head is placed inside, the bag should be quickly sealed with something like duct tape. Inhaling the gas should be avoided before sealing is done completely and lying position is taken, so the bag wouldn't be damaged due to falling. When sealing is done and lying position is taken, breathing may be resumed. If everything is done well, passing out and dying should happen in less than 1 minute and less than 10 minutes correspondingly.

I have a canister of lighter refill butane. Is it possible to use that or does it have to be in a tank like the kind used for propane in barbeques?

Does one need more than one canister if so?
