Just for infomation; on Tuesday 13th May 2025 the Scottish devolved administration is discussing and voting on an assisted dying Bill. It is uncertain whether, should it pass and move forward on its legislative journey, the administration actually have the competence to put this into practise or is the matter reserved for the UK Government at Westminster.
The Bill is restricted, as presently presented, to persons suffering from a recognised terminal condition who are certified as mentally competent. They must also be able to administer the means of death themselves without external assistance.

Dude, imagine hundreds of thousands going into your country so they can legally die. Just thinking about it seems to be a logistical and PR nightmare! A country gets paid to kill foreigners. Countries will lose slaves serfs citizens AND money to another country? their leaders will not be amused.

Not saying I don't want this and similar bills approved, but my anxiety helps me overthink the repercussions. Feel free to tear me to pieces for "killing the dream" or something, just let me save the game first.

I imagine it will be expensive, so the country will be making money. I hope that's a reason to allow it. But yeah other countries might have issue with it.

It's a long way, even should it get passed, for it to travel before becoming law. And I suspect that there would be safeguards built in restricting access to it to nationals or persons resident for a certain period (of years, not weeks) in the UK.
In practical terms I suspect thatsuch an Act would really need to apply across England and Wales also.
Rest assured that even if this or a similar Act ever becomes law there will be no likelihood of a Dignitas type set up being permitted to be established here.

This is a great step for those who are terminally ill.

But as we all know there are tons of diseases that cause extreme suffering that are not terminal including mental illness. There is a long way to go.

Trauma can also do that, creating and living in bubble or sometimes sensory overload, very low sense of worth can be a driving factor too. It's all about feeling loved, cared for and worthy to be saved. I have observed some people with ADHD and ASD are drawn to it too, likely it related to internal restlessness, anxiety and Christianity appeals to people going through suffering, be it poverty, financial or other vulnerabilities. I see it another form of survival mechanism to hold onto hope by creating a bubble where they feel safe and protected

It's insane how low the bar is, that we celebrate that people in excruciating pain on their deathbed will finally be allowed to die... some time in the next few years... if they would otherwise die very soon... if the doctors decide they are competent... if they can administer the death themselves... It's just such a slap in the face. The people against this bill are not serious or they're completely anti-human, pro-suffering, anti-freedom, selfish.

I feel like her talking about people taking their life as being a burden is very reductionist mono causal of her. I think not enough is done to meaningfully address the pain & suffering of people, be it loneliness or just not accepting that there may not be enough qualitative life for others to go on, before they chose to give up and various other factors as simply not having physical, financial and emotional means to go further in life, some realistic circumstances that affect, some are very self aware to understand the nature of society and world while think others like her would chose to not be aware to avoid pain & suffering in order to themselves not slip through the crack & break apart when reality touches their carefully curated bubble world of "everything is gonna be okay" causing tension and anxiety, restlessness, fear and paranoia, it's the fear in their own mind that people would give up on them as the norm instead to trying to care and reach out & support, because they themselves would lose hope in such a case if others don't crusade for them because they lived such reality but chose to ignore it with respect to the world in order to hold onto the hope and survive, they are so much vulnerable & living in survival mode. It's always an assumption that it's out of vulnerability and no rationality on the part of people seeking this. In short it's all projection, they live in one reality as the truth.

In many countries suicide is already "decriminalized" but they have strategically re-added every component of it being criminalized. That's how suicidal people can be arrested, imprisoned, force-fed, defamed and blackmailed without any crime or protest.
