Hi, I live in South Korea and I just saw this story on the news.

There was a man here with a severe illness who was boarding a flight to Switzerland. He intended to go and be euthanized, which is illegal in Korea. Before going, he had left a letter to his parents at home to say sorry to them. His parents read the letter and called the police, and they removed him from the flight before it took off.

As far as I know, there are no laws against traveling to other countries for assisted death. I don't think he even stated in the letter that he was going for that purpose, so at that point the police may not even been completely sure of his intent. It just seems really cruel that they would just remove him from the flight like that.

Obviously ones family would not want you to die, regardless of how you view it. I am more surpsrised on how he manged to get assisted ctb outside his home country. As far I'm concerned, you need to have residence and insurance IN Switzerland to be eligible. I did some research a while ago myself, since I am not too far away from there. Many pages stated those to be must have criteria. Is that false? Is that the whole story?

There might be more to it, but that's all I saw. Maybe he wasn't thinking clearly and was just going with the hope of getting any chance at all.

How was he able to get approved for euthanasia in Switzerland ?

It's a very long process, you have to get medical records and then meet with doctors in Switzerland.

I'm not sure, the article that I read didn't say anything about it. He might have just gone impulsively with some vague hope.

Is it true Switzerland invented a suicide pod? Where you can just go and die, without the paperwork?
