The doctor prescribed me Mirtazapine does anyone take it and what side effects have you suffered, I read it's meant to be good for erectile dysfunction and insomnia I would only take one at night but I don't want to be turned into a zombie, I have just got my energy back after being a zombie for two years after taking Risperidone and of course no mention there could be a chance of these causing any side effects.

Any experiences or advice would be great.

I will say that on the starting doses it'll make you really sleepy, but that will go away once your dose goes up. Best thing is to take 10-30 minutes before you're ready to go to sleep.

I didn't personally have a great experience with it, but I don't do well with antidepressants in general, so I doubt you'll have the same issues I had (mostly paranoia and auditory hallucinations)

The best dose of mirtazapine is the final dose of 45 mg, as the typical starting dose of 15 mg causes horrendous hangovers and acute, intense nightmares.

For me, it's had some value in the past as a drowsiness inducer, but not always these days.

Worst negative side effect for me is blurry vision.

I have been taking it for a long time. I have never experienced any bad side effects at all. None .
From what I have read and been told , it seems to be about the 'gentlest' of all the generally prescribed anti depressants.
It will help you sleep but I doubt it will turn you into a zombie.
Good luck with it anyway.

What dose are you taking? Mirtazapine is sedating at lower doses, and more activating at higher doses.

I just started 30mg last week. I really don't like it, it causes restless legs. Reminds me of my experience with akathisia, so it's really unbearable for me. I've tried halving it to see if it would help, plus I wanted to sleep...and the restless legs were still a side effect, my sleep didn't improve either.

I hope you have a better experience. I'll try this med for a few more nights and see if the RLS will wear off.

It may not happen to you :) I looked it up when it started happening and it doesn't seem too common. It should really help you sleep if you start at a low dose.

I'm supposed to take it, after a while it really doesn't do much after from put you too sleep. It's gives me a dry month and makes me eat lot at certain sand on other days I can't even get out of bed. I wouldn't blame the drug it's self it's just my issue at home stem from abuse. But like I said it doesn't give me energy or excitement at waking up in the morning. It's more of you feel numb like you don't feel any emotion and you've had a couple of pints in the pub feel

Honestly, no. It made me want to eat the contents of my house and I'm not really a big eater. I've never experienced a drug (Prescribed or illegal) to give me such hunger which couldn't be stopped. It was truly a bizarre feeling of wanting to just eat anything and everything. I laugh about it now but I put on a stone in a month and I'm a small person so that's a lot of weight.

I didn't find it helped me sleep either. But like all pharms, different things work for different people.

No harm in giving it a whirl. Just lock your fridge :pfff:

Thank you,

This is the frightening thing I have already put on 3 stone in weight in lock down and not doing much exercise, so basically I will eat everything it's like the munchies without the buzz, OMG.:smiling:

I had an engineer friend who had isolated Mirtazapine as his molecule of choice and reported / confirmed it doesn't mess around with your sexuality. It's not guaranteed you will gain weight on it. With some control and will, he managed to keep his weight stable. Best taken at night due to the highly sedative effect. Can work well for panick attacks (his case) and anxiety in general.

More varied user feedback

I was put on this to help me sleep and it knocked me out, but it took me hours to get going in the morning. I also put on a lot of weight as I just wanted to eat all the time. I've not expereinced anything like it. It was like a compulsion to eat. Compared to sertraline that I was on before, it didn't really help with the depression so overall wasn't a good experience for me. I chose to come off this as putting on so much weight and feeling lethergic made me feel worse. But I didn't have side effects going on and coming off the drug so it might be worth trying if you have a strong will to not eat everything in sight if you do get the munchines!

Risperidone! Did so much damage to me I can't even hear or read that name! That and Quetiapine!

OMG, Risperidone is why I am on SS, it has totally destroyed my life, I was on 2mg and at 6 months I would wake up after 4 hours sleep at 1 year suffered from anxiety, erectile dysfunction lost my taste for tea/coffee and cigarettes then I just couldn't move I lost my energy and motivation it was like the locked in syndrome, I worked in the City clean shaved suited and booted for over 30 years and I didn't want to talk to anyone and when people talked to me I couldn't respond, I grew a beard I hate beards or stubble but I couldn't do nothing, I got out of bed walked to the living room and sat and said nothing just watching TV and surfing the net. I stopped myself and started suffering from tinnitus lucky it was only minor still get it but I don't notice it most days, it's improved not sure if that's down to vitamins.

About 15 months after stopping all drugs the side effects were still there I was stuffed my only break came when I noticed I bought my mum some really expensive vitamins and she never used them they were Vitamin D, Cod Liver Oil and Turmeric and after popping them the next day my mind was clearer so I kept taking them and added a multivitamins and minerals complex and I improved. I have trouble sleeping I try to go to bed at 2am and get up at 10am but that's a struggle, I have been asking the NHS psychiatrist coordinator for a AD for almost 2 years and the shit has ignored my e-mails I actually spoke to the psychiatrist 1 month ago and he said he can give me a short dose of drugs to help me sleep still not heard nothing but fuck them I have done it on my own, lucky I was researching and buying drugs and paying for testosterone tests myself as all my doctors were female, lol but I thought sod it I have paid tax and national insurance for over 30 years so it's time I got something out of it and I met a french doctor I asked for 7.5 zoplicane and she gave me by mistake the lower dose I was on the telephone with her and she said she made a mistake but will double it up I ended up with a months supply, woohoo. I told the doctor about 10 times everything is caused by Risperidone side effects and she wouldn't believe me and then she said I will give you Mirtazapine, not a word about any side effects so I don't think GP's and Doctors know what they peddle but she was nice and gave me nice drugs so I never belittled her, :smiling: .

If I can beat my insomnia I will be OK even though I have lost my independence and career but I need a 3 week Thailand detox to flush all the crap out of my system and lose 2 or 3 stone as they have no TV so you just concentrate on getting fit but it's the bloody Covid 19 everything is closed.

Anyway that's my rant over, :smiling:

Good luck I hope things improve for you,

Cheers

Geo

I just checked my online GP records and the Dr has prescribed me 15mg Mirtazapine as a starting dose, so I think this is to much after the feedback and reviews, so I will cut the tablets in half she has given me 1 month supply with automatic renewal but I will try it for a week to see how I get on like all reviews there are good and bad but I have no discipline and an addictive personality so I hope I don't get the munchies.

Thanks for your help guy's and girls,

Cheers

Geo

I tried mirtazapine at the starting dose of 15mg and hated it. I slept 14 to 15 hours a day and the time I was awake I still felt half asleep and hungry, and it increased my anxiety too. I was on it for a month and my weight increased by a stone and a half (21 lbs).

Does anyone know a pill which will make me sleep for 3 months so I can CTB in my sleep, how great would that be,

The usual constipation as a temporary side effect.
Has a sedating effect, paradoxically, seems to be more sedating at lover levels.
Kept me asleep and i didn't want to get out of bed.
Tends to make people hungry and for them to put on weight. I was seeing an endocrinologist at the time and he was shocked I'd been prescribed it. He said, and I quote: "It causes diabetes."
I did some research and it appears that like many of these drugs, it messes with your hormone levels (obviously) and screws up your glucose metabolism.
If you are hungry and putting on weight on it there is a reason for that: ghrelin and leptin govern hunger/satiety. It messes with those and you tend to eat more carbs. Insulin then transforms the excess carbs into fat, specifically visceral fat, especially if you don't exercise, as many depressed people don't.
This is the pathway to diabetes.
It did nothing for my mood, I was on it for around eight months.
I stopped taking it.
It's the go to drug in the UK atm. It's cheap, acts as an anti-depressant, has an anxylotic effect also, and promotes sleep. Value for money.
I personally wouldn't take it, but then I also won't take any similar drugs either, as they all have long term deleterious effects but no positive effects for me.
I guess it depends if it works and if the long term risks are worth the short term benefits.

I've been on it for a few years now, I was always skinny before with a low appetite, initially it gave me much needed weight gain but it didn't stop! It has however been great for anxiety and insomnia for me at lower doses

Everyone is different, but for me, the constipation and improvement in quality of sleep were instant. I think it will take 4-6 weeks to see any potential benefit. You may also have the dose increased, which is the same side effects again (which wear off). I'd suggest, if you are going to try it, give it a little longer than 1 or 2 weeks (a month or so) or you may be giving it up before it's started to help.
Watch out for weight gain and hunger and if you get hungry, try not to gorge on carbs.
Good luck. It's always worth trying things you think might help, as long as you are informed.

I hated Mirtazapine. It caused me to be even more suicidal than I was before I started on them. I was crying constantly, agitated, bad tempered, and yes, I also put on a LOT of weight. The vivid dreams were interesting though - I had all kinds of adventures when I was asleep and they were so real, it was like you'd actually been there. I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't stopped taking them after around 10 weeks. Never again!! :eh:

Okay...nb. Eat first before coffee. Coffee before food deranges blood sugar and with mirtazapine you may be already on that roller coaster. Coffee after food is less harmful.
