Hey-

So I'm pretty new here, though I've been lurking around a bit. Just want to say Hi and maybe break the ice with a simple off topic question.

Anyone else collect records? Like vinyl?

It's actually pretty soothing, and the idea that music has a permanence in physical form kinda brings me a strange peace. Streaming and stuff is fine, but it's temporary...it's fleeting. But owning a record, with the music imprinted onto the vinyl... it becomes fixed...like it lives on beyond the streaming service. You can touch it and feel it and know its there, and not in some digital ether.

Anyway... any other vinyl enthusiasts out there?

I've got a lot from rap, rock, RNB, souls. Most of them were hand me downs but I bought a couple. And yeah it does feel good to actually have music physically, your not just seeing the art, you can physically feel it and hold it close to you. its nice.

hehe~ how neat! ^_^ I just download mp3's myself but definitely support physical media over digital media! :D Like when you stream stuff, you don't even own it! :( And it goes away when you stop paying for it~ :/ Anyways, my Mom collected records for a little while, but she hasn't used the record machine in a while~ :)

Yeah- I agree.

It's actually pretty cool how they make records, and I can't recall exactly, but the scratches need to be cut backwards in reverse, and then when spun, it plays forwards or something.

The most interesting bit is that all those scratches are just sound vibrations etched into plastic- like thousands of these little chaotic vibrations... but then a needle rubs along them, with a tiny little microphone attached, and the needle bumping into those little scratches becomes music...

There has to be a metaphor here...
