To introduce myself. While suicidal for a while, I was always a good wage slave, and appreciated the money I got from it

After suffering from an illness that made it increasingly difficult to work the 10-14 office workdays common in my country and profession and not given the option of remote work I left my long held job in 2019 and planned to ctb soon, specifically after an "hedonistic" period I planned to have with my savings

Then the virus came, everything closed, no job, no hedonism possible, didn't know what to do. My old job contacted me pretty soon "that's what you wanted right? remote work"

Just two weeks ago there were rumors a return to the office was imminent, until Delta striked and the corporation seemed to change their mind. Now I think I'll keep this job at least until December

When they hired me again they said they would "look into your situation after the pandemic ends". But something tells me they will want me at the office again, at least partially until

My health is at a state where I could probably do it again, but I don't understand why. The only reason I'm healthy again is because of remote work

I get nausea from thinking of commuting 3 hours a day plus 10-14 hours at the office where I'm lucky if I work 4 of those hours, and the rest I need to "look busy" surrounded by dozens of people, with no privacy thanks to open office floor plans

Holyshit you have a long commute. Sounds awful having not enough work to do and to have to pretend to be busy. I'm envious that you are employed, but it sounds rough.

My commute is more like 2 hours where I'm currently living (don't know which place I would end up after the pandemic), but depending on rain it can easily push up to 5 hours on rush time

You know what's the worst part? I would say at least a two times a week I would work those hours when I'm not legally required to. I still do but with remote work is easier to handle it. You have to be exactly at 8:30am for the morning meeting, do nothing all day, but they will give you something urgent right before lunch time or just before leaving the office, pushing you to leave until 9-10pm . I would a lot of the times "joke" that it would be better for everyone if I worked those hours instead.
Coupled with the health problems I was having (chronic insomnia and terrible stomach issues) made that kind of work impossible to handle

And it's not like my case is atypical in my country, I know others that have it way worse (leaving until midnigh and expected to show early in the morning)

Yes, I can't even work remote. When I have to go to the office I have 2 hours commute per day. Today is the second day in a row when I don't log in to our corporate chat at all, and it has happened in the past already. I hate drawing attention to myself though, people just act like they care in order to force you into staying alive.

It's so annoying when people can't accept that remote work is legitimate and higher-ups are obsessed with forcing employees to return to the office to pointlessly micromanage everyone. I also hate playing office politics, but it's nearly impossible to avoid.
