I'm switching from an iphone 11 to a galaxy s24, I've never used an android phone before so I'm quite curious to see what the differences are.
I chose to switch to a samsung phone as the camera quality is better than the iphone 15's and I want the customisation features that come with android.

What one do you prefer/use and why?

I've only ever used Apple products. I like Apple for the sleek design. I have a 13 mini, iPad, MacBook Air, AirPods, etc. To me, Apple symbolizes higher quality

Same here, the designs are so sleek and the ecosystem is very convenient. But in recent times companies like samsung have created very nice designs even better looking then some of the recent iphones in my opinion. Only product I dislike from apple is the airpods, I will always prefer an over the ear traditional headphone, but there is no way I'm paying the price for their ones whatever they are called.

I have always used Apple products because they are the most familiar to me, but in recent years, every phone they've been releasing is literally just the same model but with a "better" camera. Do you know if Samsung phones still have earphone jacks? I remember the day Apple removed them and I still haven't forgiven them.

P.S. I lost my other Airpod! 😭

Some of them do some of them don't. I am receiving mine tomorrow, I will let you know if it does or not. I think the lower budget samsung phones tend to have a headphone jack, but the more pricey ones don't. With android phones though, it is quite convenient because you can pick and choose the brand that has the features you require which you don't get with iphones.

Android.

I don't like being a "slave" of the ecosystem.
In Android, you're a little less of a slave.

When it comes to practical things, both ecosystems are very close to each other at this point.
Only the details decide.

Interesting.

You very often complain that there is unnecessary and senseless consumerism
You also blame the United States for this very often.
And on the other hand, you also contribute a lot to this.
You are the perfect American. Your government is proud of you.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I don't offend, of course.
I just draw conclusions from observations

Yeah, I agree with you on this. While I understand that the consumerist society we live in can make it so that we find ourselves participating in it unintentionally at times, it is important to call out ourselves and others for this type of hypocrisy. This type of brand loyalty to big corporations is kind of weird to see from someone who is so against capitalism since you would assume that it would be something that would be acknowledged and worked on instead of announced proudly. It's especially bad when looking at the shit that Apple is now trying to pull off at the moment with the Apple pro vision headset.

Watch from 38:13 to the end.

I've shared this video on here before but I just felt like highlighting it again because of how perfect the ending is. I'd honestly recommend watching the whole video if you get the chance to since it's very interesting.

In general, supporting and cheering for corporations is, in my opinion, pathological.
It doesn't matter which corporation it is.

Of course, the leading example is Apple.
The current meme is a trained army of followers who buy EVERYTHING from Apple.
However, this problem also applies to other corporations.

For example, I like games.
I often browse gaming forums.
Very often I see a "war" between the followers of Microsoft (Xbox) and Sony (PlayStation).
This is kind of abstract to me.
Corporations don't give a damn about consumers.
But that doesn't stop some people from arguing.

Of course, I wrote my previous comment half jokingly, half seriously.
Of course, I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy products from corporations.
Unless you live in some cave in an isolated place, sooner or later you have to use the corporation's services/products.
You just shouldn't overdo it.
Currently, corporations have too much power.

Unfortunately, I don't speak English, so I don't fully understand the video you sent.
But I guess the point is that corporations are focused on profits and making consumers dependent?

The apple vision pro is so dystopian to me. The thought that in the future we could all be walking around with a headset on our face seems pretty unnerving to me, it feels like it's straight from an episode of black mirror.

I am not very familiar with either but if I were to get one I would want the one that allows for the most privacy and security. Is there a clear winner if those are the most important selection criteria?

I'd say probably android. You'd have to change a lot of settings and such but you can disable things that apple doesn't allow you to disable I believe.

Creating artificial needs.
I agree with you on all of this. The last part is especially important to note here, which is that corporations like to create a sort of artificial need for their consumers. Apple is good example of this, but it does apply to a lot of other corporations. The way how Apple is perceived in places like the US and Canada has made it so that people feel like they need an apple product. They have successfully made themselves out to be seen as something needed to fit in or to make one feel better about themself. There is a reason why Apple users are incredibly loyal to Apple despite there being plenty of other phones and laptops out there that are just as good in quality. It's about that feeling and need to be a part of an in-group that causes people to obsess over buying their products. Along with that, the ecosystem that Apple has created has made it so that once you get used to using IOS it becomes hard to go back to using non-apple products. This, again, only further creates an artificial need for their products since most apple users aren't going to want to have to go through the trouble of learning how to use non-apple products.

Corporations don't care about consumers. They don't care about making good-quality products. They only care about the stockholders and being able to make profit. They sell your information, they give you shitty cheap products that they cover in a glossy finish to make it look aestheticly pleasing, they make their shit addictive in order to keep you using their products, they advertise their products in particular way in order to make you associate them with other things (like friends, family, nostalgia, etc), they work to keep you completely loyal to them, etc.

At the end of the day, we shouldn't be cheering on any large corporations and we should be trying to minimize our consumption of their products. It's obviously impossible to not have to buy their products, but steps can be taken to at least minimize our consumerism. Things like using products until they start reaching the end of their life/start malfunctioning, buying things only when you need to, going to places like thrift stores instead of always buying brand new clothes, etc.

Trying to not be loyal to any brands is an important thing to do, especially if you claim to be against consumerism.

Used to be obsessed with following mobile tech—now I just go with whatever has the best deal after my phone is no longer supported with security updates. Maybe because I've gotten older, and/or maybe because the advancement in mobile tech has plateaued, but they all seem to be getting more and more similar as years go on. As long as I can communicate and use the apps I need, I'm good with either. Of course, Apple never really has deals that beat Android in terms of value.. Samsung has also been getting more and more expensive. I grabbed a Pixel when they had great trade-in offer on top of their sale. Honestly, I'm not impressed with it lol, but it does the job and they're supposedly promising longer support just like Samsung, though I'm very skeptical about whether it will still run smoothly or even get the newer features by then.

I personally miss Blackberry running BBOS. If they still existed, I would switch.

I totally agree.

People like to identify with a group. Even if it doesn't make sense.
They just want to belong to something bigger.
People create an ideology in a sense and do not want to betray it.
A defense mechanism also works in this case.
If you point out to such a person the errors in his thinking, that person will continue to fight with you.
It doesn't matter that he is in a losing position.
Such a person cannot agree with you because it will destroy his entire ideology.
The ideology that is the foundation of his life.

Corporations are very intelligent in exploiting our weaknesses.
Unfortunately, they are very effective.

Selling our data wholesale is a different matter.
"If something is free, you are the product."
Unfortunately, even if you pay with money, you are often the product.

For corporations, we are just numbers in Excel, nothing more.
Only profit counts.
Of course, I understand that everyone has to earn money, because without it the system could not exist, but corporations have lost their common sense.

By the way, I remembered a scene from a series I like:

I used to have an android until 2017 but I was forced to switch to stay on my family plan since my mom and sister both preferred iPhones. I miss being able to download whatever music I want into my phone but since I have YouTube premium, there's little other reason for me to switch away from my iPhone.

For some reason, most android users I know are addicted to porn games they downloaded on it anyway. 🤔

I don't really like either. Apple is known to be very anti-repair and very restrictive when it comes to iOS and Android really isn't that much better, you have a ton of privacy-invasive software by default, some phones come with bloatware too and other anti-consumer things. I'd love to run a degoogled android ROM on my phone but unfortunately I cannot nor can I afford to buy another. I'm currently interested in Linux phones and seeing where they go and if they could fix the problems I have with Android currently.
I am not very familiar with either but if I were to get one I would want the one that allows for the most privacy and security. Is there a clear winner if those are the most important selection criteria?
Running degoogled custom ROMs are considered the most private but can require specific hardware. The most reputable ones I've seen are GrapheneOS and CalyxOS. Generally iPhones are considered more private by default and Android phones with the stock ROM are considered less private than iPhones. If I'm remembering correctly GrapheneOS has a few security enhancements and is considered to be security-focused. This is information I'm recalling from a while ago so I'm not entirely sure if it's 100% correct or not.

I've been using phones longer than either Apple or Android have existed, but once they came into existence, my phones have always been Android. On my newest phone, I have switched to GrapheneOS so I can de-Google my life.

My favorite favorite phone I've ever used, though, was an old Nokia one. It came with two profiles, one for work and one for home. And when you pushed one button, it would switch between them so that when you were at home, all of your work contacts, calendars, emails, everything was hidden. Then when you went to work, you could do the same thing with all of your home stuff. It was an amazing phone. Also had a physical keyboard, which I miss so, so much.
I personally miss Blackberry running BBOS. If they still existed, I would switch.
I literally mourned when I had to switch from my last Blackberry to a more "mainstream" phone. (See my signature.)
Generally iPhones are considered more private by default and Android phones with the stock ROM are considered less private than iPhones.
If by "private" you mean Apple is the only spying on absolutely everything you do. 😉
If I'm remembering correctly GrapheneOS has a few security enhancements and is considered to be security-focused.
This is true. GrapheneOS is dedicated to privacy via a focus on no third party tracking. All of your data stays on your phone and is never seen by app devs or third parties (Unless you want, as you can add regular Google apps too).

Pity that mini phones sold so bad, Apple & others may never make them again. Or just rarely. A big phone's like a mini tablet

Then again, if they had replaceable batteries, it wouldn't matter; we'd just keep re-using the old ones. Get off the planned obsolescence treadmill

Keeping in mind that yeah, one should be wary of loyalty to amoral/immoral corporations... I also agree Apple sweats many tiny details, that make computing easier. Though probably unaffordably so for most sasu members

I have small hands, so I need to use the mini. I measured my hands once and they were only 14.5 cm. Before the 13 mini, I had a 12 mini, 1st gen SE, 5S, and 5. I just grew up using Apple products. My whole family did. It's not a sign of brand loyalty, but rather, familiarity. I've actually never used Android or Windows before

Yeah, I'm not saying it's brand loyalty for you. Just I'm aware that Apple products are crazy sexy & I don't wanna gush too much about their quality, in case someone here's gonna get obsessed over buying one :P

Like, I went to Turkey, and it caused a little commotion when I paid using my watch. Since then, I've been wary about the whole topic. Obviously, if it were just you & me talking alone, I wouldn't even mention the brand loyalty thing...

Anyway yeah, I personally hate bigger phones. My mini fits into tiny pockets/bags. Its camera's good enough; and I can post-process images to look nice. If I want a big screen, that's what laptops & mini tablets are for. A mini tablet fits in a small bag too — or even a big pocket

I love Apple products but the expense has put me off buying iphones and ipads. I have an imac and I've had ipods but I've had Samsung Galaxy phones and TV's for years now and have always thought they were just fine. Better than fine really. I've always been really happy with them. The camera quality, the sound quality, the interface all work well in my opinion.

So, from what I'm reading here it seems like maybe Apple is more secure but makes it harder to prevent Apple from gathering info about you while with Android you can fiddle with the settings more and use a de-Googled OS. So maybe a higher end Android that is de-Googled and has the default settings adjusted for more privacy might be secure and more private than Apple. What about Linux? does it work for phones?
