Advice for short-drop hanging?

I'm 90% sure I am going to CTB before Christmas.. but I obviously want a clean, successful hanging. I need advice, particularly on the kind of rope, where I should hang from, how to tie the ligature to the other end of (ex: tree, metal bar, etc) and must-knows before doing so
