One of the Laws of life (and Economics): nothing is free, not even your will.

Here's some Spinoza:

  • Ethics (P. 1, A. 3): "From a given definite cause an effect necessarily follows; and, on the other hand, if no definite cause be granted, it is impossible that an effect can follow" (Law of cause and effect)

  • I will jump through a lot of Spinoza to make it to Ethics (P. 1, Pr. 28): "Every individual thing, or everything which is finite and has a conditioned existence, cannot exist or be conditioned to act, unless you it be conditioned for existence and action by a cause other than itself, which is also finite, and has a conditioned existence; and likewise this cause cannot in its turn exist, or be conditioned to act, unless it be conditioned for existence and action by another cause, which also is finite, and has conditioned existence, and so on to infinity".

- In Spinoza's eyes, through what he proved earlier in the The Ethics, the universe is the only thing of which has no cause. Everything that isn't the Universe/Nature/existence must've had a cause, with absolutely no exceptions.

  • Lastly, Ethics (P. 1, Pr. 29): "Nothing in the universe is contingent, but all things are conditioned to exist and operate in a particular manner by the necessity of the divine nature".

- Everything that happens, happens for a reason. Since every effect must have a cause, every action must have a cause, every thought must have a cause, every emotion must have a cause etc. almost in a mechanical nature. It's necessary that these things have happened, so you really don't have a choice in the matter. Every time you think you had a choice on something, you did not. If you were to time travel in the past without the knowledge that you have now, you would make the same choice every time.

These propositions by Spinoza are really self-evident given the law of cause and effect, which I think most, if not all, people believe in. You have no free will. There is no praise and there is no blame. It's easy to understand this but it's very difficult to apply this knowledge to your everyday life. If you have regrets, just realize that everything in your life was going to happen and there was nothing you could've done to stop it. This information could be very liberating if truly understood.
