Method Would a generator kill me? How to avoid harming anyone else in the process?

I have a power generator in my garage for storms. I heard they are the most deadly product on the market due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. If I could get everyone out of the house along with the 2 pets, would this be a humane way to go? How long would it take and would I suffer? How can I prevent others from accidentally dying too since carbon monoxide is odorless?

How old is the generator? Newer ones have a safety feature that detects CO, and if the CO level in the space where the generator is being used reaches a certain amount, the generator shuts down and can't be restarted until the level of CO drops to a safe level again.

Yes, I heard this is a possible method. But as @locked*n*loaded mentioned, probably only in older models

If you were super determined, willing to invest some time and budget, could potentially find some older generators from the internet

Then just seal the garage. Maybe even run a few generators at once, but recommended to do a test run first

Put those CO detectors in garage, to test if it indeed reached deadly CO levels. If it does, then congrats, you might of secured a potential CO method, aside from just the regular charcoal burning

Strange no one talks about this method at all. Of course some challenge is associated, but still a possible method, but need access to a garage to begin with (or similar enclosed space)

If it's a feature, should tell you in owner's manual, probably on box it came in.


Followed the link you provided for your generator. Although I couldn't find anything that stated it has a high CO shutoff device on it, it did say it was CARB compliant. In other words it has a SUPER efficient catalytic converter that removes harmful emmisions, including CO.

CARB works to limit the use of:

Carbon monoxide.
Carbon dioxide (CO2).
Nitric oxides (NOx).
Sulfur oxides (SOx).
Hydrocarbons.
Particulate matter.

Don't think your generator is going to work. Plus, the one you linked is propane fueled. If yours is propane, it will burn propane much more efficiently than gasoline, hence less pollutants to start with, before even having any pollutants it does emit removed by the catalytic converter.
