Does anyone get triggered by certain words? I'm not talking about actions, just words.

I'm not diagnosed with anything, so when I say trigger I just mean something that sets you off, it may be crying, feeling annoyed, angry.
You may go silent, or feel your stomach turn. Just a feeling you get inside and you know that feeling is there because of those words.

How do you deal with it? How to stop associating certain words with past traumas?

"Loser", "man-child", "success", "achievement", "failure", "incel", "lazy", "freeloader", "parasite", "leech", "inappropriate", "right", "wrong", "not okay", "weak", "insensitive", "waste", "productivity", "normal", "boyfriend", "girlfriend", "partner", "child", "son", "daughter", "fixthe26", "opportunity", "ambition", "exciting", "boring", "work", "God", "soul", "good", "bad".

I just take the pain and move on, sometimes I rationalize or check what I actually believe/think about something to provide a counterbalance to the judgements of others.

When it comes to actual trauma related to words like someone having said "desktop" before throwing a knife at you, no idea.

Words that set me off include: trauma, police, court, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, trust, control, emptiness, childhood, family, frightened, pain, blame, alone, guilt....
I could go on and on. How do I deal with it? Some days I can cope with keeping busy ie going for a walk, looking online and trying to understand trauma or listening to certain music.

I have no idea how to stop associating these words and having all this pain but wish I knew...

In all honesty, the thing that sets me off the most is when people say "I understand". Just a thing of knowing that no one will understand another person fully bc we all experience things differently and react to things differently.
I just hate it.

Too many to count, usually the names of certain people or the things they liked do that best. A lot of things I used to like were ruined by awkward events...

marketing slang.

people who don't know shit about anything throwing around good sounding words with absolutely no meaning.
that wanted me to start a mass shooting sometimes.

luckily i didn't work in this area in the last 10 years.

I do not have trigger words. But my family knows which buttons to push. Fucking bastards. Also, I do like people who belittle family abuse as nothing special, something you need to just shrug off. especially coming from people who were brought up in a safe and stable environment. What do such brats know of suffering a couple of decades of abuse can cause.

They accept any diversity, as long as it is not diversity of opinions and values.

I also find it funny that in most people's eyes "Qanon Trump supporter" equals "far right" and "neon nazi". lol

I am so far right that most people cannot even fathom it. The only thing keeping me alive at this point.

i guess the political discussion between us would be pretty pointless ^^

just as a short orientation my political compass from the thread a while ago.
https://sanctioned-suicide.net/threads/test-the-political-compass.55363/#post-1013871

edit: i also don't like a lot from left politics. but for me it's more this problem of herd thinking. i understand why people act that way cause it gives the feeling of safety to be part of something and you also can give away responsibility. and it's sometimes crazy to see that people who are between these lines and sometimes try to see both sides are even more attacked.
i think a healthy democracy has to be able to allow a wide spectrum of opinions and values. cause diversity is important. we see this in nature. would nature not be as diverse as it is we would be long extinct at some global catastrophes in earth history where over 90% of the species died. i guess this works also for society. it gets problematic when one part of society tries to cut the liberty of others. but i guess this will be a never ending fight cause the utopian idea that everybody has as much liberty as possible except the liberty to cut others liberties is just utopian (it's a bertrand russell quote more or less translated cause i only have it in german).

Same as when the so called left calls itself tolerant.
i don't like the word tolerant. i like more the word acceptance.

I don't think there's an easy way to stop words being associated with bad experiences, but you can try to associate them with other, better things as well, in order to reduce their power and effect on you.

For me it's "I'm sorry", which is pretty much impossible to avoid. It only really triggers me these days though if I think about/experience it in a particular context, otherwise I can just kind of get over it quickly and carry on with whatever else is being said.

most of the time sexual innuendos, like "coming", "deposit", "accept", etc. its why i cant stand being around some people (birth family mostly), who talk carelessly. there are other words that are superfluous, like "but", "though", etc. that changes every once in a while, more are "like", "just". and then there is the internet, where people type out words like "meeeeh" before writing a paragraph, this triggers me more often than not

Well, there are stuff that my parents say every time I drive to them like "When will you get any children?" "Did you called xx?" "People who live alone, will stay alone for ever" or one of the worst, which is really annoying
"Is there any way to contact you? You don't have Facebook, WhatsApp or even Instagram. You're like a cave man, no one can contact you and your uncle really wants to speak with you" (He lives in UK).

But yeah, I'm very good at hiding emotions like anger or being annoyed and only express them when it's kinda too late : P

Fun Fact:
When I was going to high school, there was a bully, who was sitting behind me and stabbing me with his pen or threw stuff at me.
Well, one day after the class ended and he went out and something snapped in me where I grabbed his head and smashed it multiple times against some glass door until it broke.
Of curse I got expelled for 3 days but this wasn't really a punishment.
Also, kinda funny how I, the quiet kid who was minding his business, could do something like that. The Principal thought that this was a mistake or a prank.

also certain curse words, some more than others. bornofdust has a pretty good list of the type of words, and the contexts they can be used in can be easy to imagine

"Weak" or "Coward"

I used to get called that all the by my family, mainly my grandfather when he'd often slap me, or when we get into a verbal altercation when I tell him he's wrong about whatever I supposedly do. Stand up for yourself and try fighting back, you lose. Do nothing and remain a verbal or physical punching bag, you lose.

I'll say that everytime I hear such words, my urge to unleash my primal agression surfaces.

The rest are just words of dismissal such as "go then", or "stop talking" or the likes of. Then you might actually put yourself in danger of a serious beatdown if there were no laws against it.
