I am proud of myself the title is somewhat creative.
I don't like Musk. But there are even billionaires who I dislike even more like Peter Thiel for example. I know some people who seriously consider to leave Twitter now. I am not sure what I would do.
I mean the story is kind of clear so far. Musk was kind of arrogant and wanted to brag. He made an offer for Twitter without being careful (checking some basic information) His offer was insanely over-priced. Probably his megalomania is kind of responsible for that. When he realized his fault he wanted to cancel the contract. Well he failed at that. He made an ass out of himself in some way of form. Now he wants to prove even more how smart he is. He has some weird ideas how Twitter can raise its profit. I am no expert but it seems very likely that his plan won't function.
He now wants to demand 8 dollar per month for verification of an account. That sounds so ridiculous though it could work. But his investment was so over-priced that this won't be enough revenue.
Now comes Musks approach of politics into play. He wanted to brag to his right-wing and libertarian friends how much he is a free-speech absolutist. He said he wants that Trump can return to Twitter. Everything that is not illegal should be allowed on the platform. There are some topics which are unclear. Hate speech, revenge porn, doxxing, harrassment etc.
To be honest I think Twitter was quite liberal in this instance than for example Facebook. On the other hand there are many evil bullies on Twitter. People who spread hatred as a hobby.
The whole thing won't work. The EU already protested that Twitter has to abide the EU rules. But the EU is not the main problem. The ad money is so essential for Twitter. When there is extreme content allowed on Twitter the companies don't want to see their ads in this context for example under a hate speech post. I think some car companies already announed to be really concerned about the development. They are competitors of Tesla and want to damage Musk.
So Musk has basically to decide between a full free-speech approach or bidding the companies to pay for ads. It is a conundrum.
If Twitter goes down Musk will have to pay for it. Maybe it will be a financial disaster. I think he already sold Tesla stocks for paying the costs. He now wants to fire many many Twitter staff to increase the profits.
Personally I doubt his plan will be successful. I feel kind of schadenfreude. Billionaires pay their fair-share in some manner if they waste their money in such a megalomaniac way.
