IIRC it can, but it doesn't necessarily mean you'll suffer less, because it shortens your lifespan by making your physical health worse.

Exactly this... and my own physical health is an example. My mental health reached the point that it's taken a physical toll on me.

It does, but as @_Gollum_ said, it is by deteriorating your physical health slowly, but surely. It is by no means painless nor ideal. If you remove cases of suicide, I imagine the respective life expectancy is only about 10 years lower than the avg. person of your demographic.
