I've recently started looking for help and I have never experienced so much aggravation to help myself. This is started to border on excruciating.
Are you in the UK? You won't just get referred to the CMHT because you asked your GP once. Doesn't really work like that.Mental health help is in its infancy. It isn't really treated with the same importance as other fields. Furthermore, the folks running the show are extremely detached from the plight of the modern man where depression is rife. They don't care. There are other issues of course and ultimately it depends on where you live. If you lived in the UK, I would tell you to go to your GP and tell them your problems. They will likely refer you to a mental health professional on the NHS. If they don't, you can insist on it and they have to do it anyway.
I am in Northern Ireland. That's exactly how it works here. From experience and from third party accounts. Are you in the UK? You won't just get referred to the CMHT because you asked your GP once. Doesn't really work like that.
More often that not your GP will be your first line of 'therapy' and care. Will likely want to try you on medications first. Waiting's lists for anything MH related on the NHS are crazy. Months upon months for therapies in some areas.
Having money doesn't make you any better either. As someone who has spent thousands upon thousands on private mental healthcare, it's no better. Faster yes, doesn't fix you though.
Does OP mean excruciating because they can't get the help they think they need or require or they it's painful going through the healing process?
Like I said, this post is open to so many interpretations without further detail.

Yeah telling someone your suicidal is a great way to be forced into your ER and possibly the mental hospital. Here, here. They always say to reach out and ask for help when you are depressed/suicidal... but actually finding this supposed "help" is darn near impossible. Good on you for trying, though. I'm proud of you.
