That sounds so... :I one note and a little corny.

I like to call it "Self Check Out", or I just say "I'm killing myself". Why are people not calling it what it is?

Catching The Bus to where? You don't know if you're coming back. Doesn't matter if you hope to or not, the point is you don't even know if you're going anywhere. "Self Check Out", or "I'm killing myself" is more blunt, raw, and to the point. Saying you're going to catch the bus just seems like it makes it a smoother way for you to mentally be okay with killing yourself. Hell, even calling it "Turning Off The Light" would sound better.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Idk Catching the bus gives this colt vibes. We're talking about how we're gonna end our lives, but can't say it bluntly. Why not?

Warning, urban myth potential!

I have read that it came from the UK. More specifically from the town of Eastbourne. Near Eastbourne is Beachy Head, on the famous white cliffs of Dover. Beachy Head is 160 metres high and easy to access. People jump from there.

To get to Beachy Head, you take a bus from Eastbourne. Hence, 'catching the bus' became associated with jumping from Beachy Head.

Every community has its expressions, including this one. Some people here greet you with "sorry you're here." Some wish you peace. And some say CTB.

I don't think the bus has to go anywhere, or come back, I quite like the sound of catching the bus. The bus goes to death, you can decide for yourself what that means. just my opinion

I've always wondered: could CTB be considered a euphemism? I guess it's easier to type than commit suicide.

CTB is just an expression I've learned back in the a.s.h. days. So I use it.

I take at as an expression of sense of humor. "Catching the bus" meaning jumping in front of a moving bus and thus euphemism for suicide.

When I attempted a few weeks back, I literally had to catch a bus to get to where I needed to be, I got to the place I needed to, my husband was expecting me home, he mailed me said when would I be home, I said I am off to CTB now..... he took the meaning one way i took it another,
for me those words just work, had never heard of it before this site, but its a way of saying it without being so blunt in a already harsh world.

I've heard Cease To Be as well. Catch The Bus clicks for me more though. If you miss the bus you just catch the next one!

I've never heard about ctb before until I came here however I personally see it as: do you plan to take your own life? Then you'll get in to the bus and if your SI suddenly starts to kick in then your bus will be delayed for a unknown time.
If you decide to catch the batch earlier than planned then you took a few buses earlier etc.
It sounds much better than """commiting suicide"""" imo

If you don't want to use ctb in place of suicide, then dont. Just know a lot of us do use it.

I actually prefer commit suicide. Even more so the term we use in my native language which literally translates as self-murder. However, I can see the point in using dedramatizing words, so I simply use leave, go, departure, end it, and so one.

when it translates to self-murder the words commit suicide make sense BUT the words in the english variation of Commit Suicide bugs me, to me the word is used when you commit a crime, commit a murder, commit a immoral act, which to me isn't what we are doing, in my eyes it's pro choice, and that isn't a crime, it may be in the eyes of some laws, or at least unaccetpable, but I don't consider suicide as a act of crime, which committing suicide says,
Not sure if this makes any sense?

I respect that standpoint. However, if something is brutal I think it should have a brutal name. Catching the bus can be peaceful, liberating, even beautiful, but there's no denying that ending your life by shooting yourself in the head, strangling yourself, jumping from a high building, poisoning yourself, and whatnot is brutal. But again, I'll respect the inofficial decorum here, because I certainly understand the purpose.

"Close the book" works too. I've stopped using the term but it doesn't bother me that people do; I think it's apt because there's always another b to c if it doesn't work out this time.

These days I tend to favour "kill oneself" because that's what we're talking about. But each of us is free to use the terms we prefer, right? Right!

For a long time while I was lurking here I thought it was a shortcut for "Cross the Bridge", used for same purposes. Only recently found out it's "Catch the Bus", sounds just as good to me.
I guess it sounds somewhat more natural and less alarming to the brain part with survival instinct in it.
