Supposedly (and they did this in the case of my own dog too) they inject animals with a sedative before finally injecting them with N so that they don't get "scared" (as my own vet put it at the time), but if the N itself puts you to sleep before the physical effects leading up to death take place then why would that be necessary?

I'd see why a sedative would be desirable in humans, because we *know* that this substance is going to kill us, but do dogs know? I guess they probably do (animals are very intuitive), but still…

Maybe they haven't used N as the euthanasia agent and that's why they've used a sedative first. One agent used for euthanasia when N is not available is a complex of embutramide, mebezonium and tetracaine as a single formulation.

It ensures that the animal is still for the injection of N and helps to minimise stress for the owners more than anything if the animal struggles or gets upset. It just makes the passing more peaceful and ensures they hit the vein first time with the N

Yes Dog's do know when it's their time to go, their behaviour in the preceding days is different to their usual doggy ways! To me losing a dog hurts my heart more than knowing some person has passed, unless that person was special to me!

My dog was like a brother to me (I met him when I was 2 years old) so I know the feeling. I still have his collar and plan on wearing it when I die so I can listen to that familiar jingle that used to accompany him romping toward me during my final moments. Maybe if I whisper "Come on Juneau!" as I'm dying his spirit will come find me and take me to wherever he is. Although I know that's just utterly delusional/idealistic thinking on my part. :ehh:

@Wrennie, When pets die they all go to a place called Rainbow Bridge,it's just this side of heaven, their restored to youth and vigour, the weather is always nice and sunny, there's fresh water and tasty food for them to eat, and Best of all when You pass on You'll be able to join them there, never to be parted again!
