it seems odd, as though venting thoughts or announcing one's wish to ctb is something to be pittied, or sorrow acknowledged.

i certainly don;t want to hear "i'm sorry things came to this". if my decision is rational, then so be it, why say you are sorry?

I think it's just a generalised thing, no one is born wanting to die, illness, experiences and personal decisions ultimately lead one up to wanting to CTB. So I think when they say sorry, they're sorry for whatever had caused the person to feel like that

People probably say that because they're sorry that you suffered enough in life to want to end it, even if they've let go of the natural assumption that death is always a bad thing.

I usually avoid saying "I'm sorry things came to this," because I worry that it makes people feel pitiful. Personally, I think that things are the way they are, and accepting my lethal solution without wallowing in self-pity, much less the pity of others, would be the easiest and most dignified way to go.

It's an expression of compassion. Some people appreciate it. No one is required to, of course.

I believe it's an expression of sadness for what you're going through.

I think it's often because they don't know what else to say. this is a complicated and painful topic, and so it can be just as complicated and painful to formulate a decent response.

Some good points have been made above. Sorry is a generalization and it's something different to everyone. While some may genuinely feel bad for you I think most people use this word to end the topic in their mind.

It's like when people say they're praying for you. Do you think they actually do pray for you? Some maybe, but most no. We're designed to be selfish creatures so I don't think that anyone is really praying or sorry in a true sense. Unless they're praying or sorry for their own skin.

Usually they are not pitying you. They're empathizing with you. There's a big difference.

Another Canadian here. I spend a lot of time concerned about whether I should apologize before or after I say "Hello". Perhaps you could "Can-splain" the best way. Sorry—immigrated :smiling:

When I say I'm sorry, it's because I feel the same pain as them. And while it's comforting, I also hate the very reason that brings us all together, because I would never wish this on anyone. The pain, the abuse, the suffering, etc. It's absolutely heartbreaking... All we have is text and so our words can't convey how we sound or our expressions as we respond to each other. But when I say it, and if the person was with me right then and there, I'd look at them in a very knowingly manner.
