Conventionally, this joke has been cited as an example of "anti-humor"--deriving it's supposed comedic value from the lack of a meaningful punchline. The answer to the riddle ("to get to the other side") is meant to be funny precisely because it's not funny at all.

Lately, however, I've been considering the possibility that the chicken was crossing the road in the hopes of being hit by oncoming traffic, thereby leaving this mortal realm and being transported to the "Other Side"( the Afterlife).

What are your thoughts?

Wow. Never thought of it that way. Now I can't think of it any other way. Makes a lot of sense.

Don't personally believe. But who knows? I can't exactly trust my own mind these days, so...
