I'm not sure about the mm but I tried to hang myself with some neckties and it seemed it was gonna work.

Theres a book that can help: FIVE LAST ACTS. You can find a free pdf if you look around. Have you read through the hanging thread? Do you really want to go? I think 15mm might be the thickest that someone would want.
